Il est une histoire que se racontent encore aujourd’hui les chasseurs de Carinthie amateurs de Pirsch. Celle d’un trophée mythique, d’un grand chamois blanc-gris, empaillé et exposé à la Maison de la nature de Salzburg. On dit à la veillée que cette bête était, comme tous les gibiers blancs marqués au sceau de l’invisibilité, protégée par la Salige, cette femme sauvage équivalente d’Artémis qui vit sur les pentes des Alpes autrichiennes, laquelle s’en servait d’émissaire. Ce chamois exceptionnel fut tué le 27 août 1913 par l’un des plus fameux chasseurs de l’Empire austro- hongrois : François-Ferdinand, duc d’Este. Malheur, cependant, à qui touchait au gibier blanc de la Salige ! A l’instar de Rodolphe de Habsbourg retrouvé sans vie à Mayerling, ou d’Alexandre Ier de Serbie, assassiné en 1903, François-Ferdinand d’Este mourut moins d’une année plus tard, sous les balles de Gavrilo Prinzip, à Sarajevo. Aux dires des chasseurs autrichiens, l’implacable châtiment du transgresseur de l’ordre sauvage se trouve ainsi aux sources de la catastrophe originelle du siècle des extrêmes. La Grande Guerre comme ordalie réparatrice du tabou transgressé : telle est, au fond, la croyance des chasseurs tyroliens ; une croyance qui clôt en son origine le cercle interprétatif de la guerre comme événement cynégétique 1. Car au commencement était la Grande Guerre.
Le cortège de désolation et de mort qu’elle sema enfanta d’Oskar Dirlewanger. Il fit la guerre la plus longue possible, la plus traumatique, et cette réalité-là s’inscrivit dans son corps : blessé à trois reprises, il fit partie de cette infime minorité de soldats qui survécurent blessés à un combat à l’arme blanche. Peu d’hommes, en somme, ont vu la guerre d’aussi près. « Chien de guerre 2 », Dirlewanger jamais n’en sortit, jamais ne parvint à se départir de cette expérience du feu qu’il transposa après novembre 1918 dans une intense activité paramilitaire, laquelle le conduisit dans toute l’Allemagne. Une expérience qu’il transposa aussi dans un engagement politique völkisch puis nazi précoce. Sa thèse de doctorat constituait en elle-même un mode de continuation de la guerre par d’autres moyens, politiques, et sur d’autres champs de bataille, académiques. Incapable de normaliser son comportement, il bascula ensuite dans la délinquance, financière ou sexuelle.
Illustration extrême de l’incapacité de la société allemande à sortir de la guerre perdue, à se déprendre de la représentation d’un « monde d’ennemis » ligués pour l’amener à sa perte, Dirlewanger incarnait aussi l’inextricabilité des liens existant entre activité cynégétique et pratique guerrière. Toute son activité militaire, à Lublin comme en Biélorussie, en Allemagne du Sud, fut environnée par la chasse. Au-delà de la camaraderie née dans les tranchées, Dirlewanger partageait avec un homme comme Gottlob Berger une passion pour la Pirsch et pour la traque au loup 3 qu’ils pratiquèrent de concert là où la guerre entraîna Dirlewanger entre l’automne 1940 et l’été 1944. Lansquenet d’un autre temps et chasseur passionné, Dirlewanger n’en disposait pas moins de relations hiérarchiques bien plus étendues que le simple officier subalterne qu’il était alors, obtenant un accès direct à Heinrich Himmler, Berger ou von dem Bach-Zelewsky. Poursuivant grâce à ces relations un intense travail de lobbying, Dirlewanger fut l’acteur principal du développement de l’unité, qui passa, en cinq années, d’un commando de quelques dizaines d’individus à une division de grenadiers. Entre marginalité et ténacité, Dirlewanger avait ainsi construit un parcours original au sein de l’Ordre noir, un parcours dans lequel militantisme, expérience de guerre et lien social se fondaient, un parcours indissociable de celui de l’unité à laquelle il avait donné son nom.
Composé d’hommes perçus au prisme de cette culture de la chasse qui faisait de la Grande Guerre la conséquence directe de la transgression d’un tabou par l’archiduc assassiné à Sarajevo, le Sonderkommando Oranienburg, devenu rapidement Sondereinheit Dirlewanger, fut constamment appréhendé dans des cadres extérieurs à la « normalité nazie ». Combinant, aux yeux de dignitaires aussi éminents que Hitler ou Himmler, passion cynégétique, violence débridée et cruauté du Sang noir, les braconniers de l’unité s’étaient vu confier la « pacification » et la chasse à des partisans, précisément assimilés, avant même tout contact avec eux, à des bêtes sauvages, à des proies qu’il fallait traquer.
En Pologne et en Biélorussie, ces confins de l’empire millénaire en devenir, l’épanchement de cette violence qu’ils « avaient dans le sang » était nécessaire et souhaitable, tout y en étant commodément contenu. Ayant intériorisé un système discursif saturé de représentations du Sauvage, de la violence menaçante du Sang noir, de la chasse comme métaphore guerrière et de l’imaginaire du guerrier échauffé, ces hommes mirent en place, sous l’égide de leur chef, des gestuelles guerrières très particulières. Pister et traquer les groupes de partisans dans les forêts biélorusses, c’était une forme de guerre en parfaite continuité avec les pratiques de chasse observées par les ethnologues de la Pirsch. Une guerre dans laquelle ils étaient censés exprimer ces qualités cynégétiques que la communion intime avec le Sang noir leur octroyait, aux yeux de leurs supérieurs comme à ceux des combattants qu’ils côtoyaient.
La mise en place, à partir de janvier 1942, d’immenses battues de ratissage constitua le pendant de la Pirsch, induisant des liens sociaux égalitaires entre les chasseurs et des pratiques de mise à mort en masse des animaux piégés. A la chasse-cueillette que représentaient la Pirsch et la reconnaissance, dans laquelle les armes prélevées faisaient figure de trophées à l’instar des cadavres des partisans, s’opposait ainsi l’opération de ratissage, chasserécolte dans laquelle le résultat de l’opération était exprimé sous forme de butin en produits fermiers, en main-d’oeuvre déportée et en bétail confisqué. Loin d’être une évidence fonctionnelle, ce système résulte de choix d’ordre culturel, fondés sur un imaginaire spécifique 4, adapté, selon les responsables nazis, à cette guerre à leurs yeux inédite et en parfaite conformité avec l’image qu’ils se faisaient de leurs ennemis. C’est parce que l’ennemi était ravalé, à leurs yeux, au rang d’animaux sauvages qu’ils envisagèrent de le piéger dans des nasses humaines ou de le pister en petits groupes s’enfonçant au coeur de leur repaire. C’est parce que les partisans polonais et russes étaient a priori perçus sur le mode de la sauvagerie et de la cruauté que les dignitaires SS conçurent l’idée de fonder une unité de braconniers, de chasseurs noirs. Noirs, ils l’étaient parce qu’ils portaient, malgré toutes les dénégations venues de la SS, l’uniforme de l’ordre ; noirs, ils l’étaient parce que au sein de la SS, ils se trouvaient eux-mêmes stigmatisés pour leur cruauté et pour leur communion avec le souffle du monde sauvage.
L’imaginaire du Sauvage, cependant, ne peut rendre compte à lui seul de toutes les populations rencontrées par l’unité 5. Les paysans russes des villages se trouvant en zones d’opérations et les détenus juifs des camps de travail partageaient en effet certaines caractéristiques fort différentes des groupes de partisans. Ceux-là étaient réputés cruels et dangereux, les autres étaient des « animaux » domestiques inoffensifs. Tous avaient été rassemblés – parqués ; certains, les juifs notamment, avaient été marqués ; tous, enfin, avaient été mis au travail.
L’échelle ainsi reconstituée, menant du Domestique au plus noir du Sauvage, fait correspondre à un élément d’un des pôles son équivalent dans l’autre – le chien et le loup, le cerf et le taureau. Elle admet des cas d’ensauvagement : la rage. Les villages suspectés d’entente avec les partisans sont appréhendés comme des animaux domestiques menacés d’un retour à l’état sauvage, à cause de l’épizootie. Pour l’éradiquer, les chasseurs noirs attachaient un grand soin à verser le moins possible le sang de leurs victimes, un sang symboliquement redevenu noir ; la crémation des vivants répondait ainsi à un imaginaire extirpateur et purificateur de l’ordre domestique. De la sorte, les chasseurs noirs se comportent selon des codes anthropologiques à la fois anciens, communs aux cultures européennes depuis l’âge préhistorique, et suffisamment déchiffrables pour diffuser leurs effets dans l’ensemble des forces de sécurité présentes en Biélorussie. C’est à cette aune que l’on peut évaluer le mélange d’estime et de réprobation dont l’unité jouissait : novatrice dans son activité de chasse (en témoigne le « dispositif de déminage » qu’elle mit au point) et cruelle à l’extrême dans ses comportements y compris par les troupes de sécurité, l’unité était sans cesse évaluée à l’échelle du Sauvage et du Domestique. Ce discours leur était dans le même temps retourné pour les stigmatiser et les célébrer. Plusieurs décennies après les faits, il reste audible dans les propos des témoins et des accusés dans les procédures d’enquête sur les crimes nationaux-socialistes.
Construit en constante tension avec l’observation quotidienne du réel, ce système de représentations a connu une lente dissolution au fur et à mesure du recul des troupes allemandes, et il s’est estompé avec l’envoi de la troupe en Slovaquie et en Hongrie. Ce n’était pas seulement le statut des victimes qui mutait à chaque nouveau déplacement de l’unité, mais bien le caractère des combats qu’elle menait. Ceux-ci se rapprochaient inexorablement d’une guerre de position dans laquelle l’assaillant russe disposait d’un avantage humain et matériel écrasant. Plus le temps passait, plus la situation s’aggravait, et moins le combat ressemblait à une chasse. Ou, plutôt, moins les chasseurs noirs se sentaient en position de traque et plus ils devenaient proies. L’unité se laissa anéantir sur place plutôt que de céder du terrain à la marée humaine soviétique qui submergeait le territoire allemand, illustrant le comportement général de cette armée du désespoir qu’était l’Ostheer du printemps 1945. Sur les quelque six mille recrues de la division, seule une cinquantaine restait encore en état de combattre au matin du 25 avril. Le reste, quand il n’était pas tué ou blessé, fit l’expérience de la captivité, avec le parcage, le marquage et la mise au travail, soit une domestication exactement symétrique à celle que les chasseurs noirs avaient fait subir aux populations biélorusses. Pratiques de guerre et destins collectifs de l’unité Dirlewanger sont ainsi analysables à l’aune de l’imaginaire de la chasse et du sauvage, et ce, dans la « victoire » comme dans la défaite.
N’est-on pas en présence d’un cas limite interdisant toute généralisation ? Oui, l’unité est exceptionnelle. Mais la question comme la réponse ne constituent ni plus ni moins qu’une variante de cette stratégie de mise à l’écart, employée par les dignitaires SS ou les fonctionnaires de l’administration civile biélorusse, mais aussi par les témoins et les accusés lors des enquêtes contre les crimes de la Partisanenbekämpfung. Pour tous, hier comme aujourd’hui, il est crucial de bâtir une barrière de protection entre les chasseurs noirs et les « hommes ordinaires », de même qu’il est crucial pour les sociétés européennes de séparer le Domestique et le Familier du Sauvage.
Si les chasseurs noirs et les réprouvés qui peuplèrent la Sondereinheit Dirlewanger font effectivement d’elle une unité socialement peu représentative, ses pratiques de violence ressemblent en tous points à celles des autres formations de lutte contre les partisans. Sur les sept cents villages brûlés en Biélorussie, l’unité est loin d’avoir assumé la plus grande part de ces dévastations. Les déplacements de population, la réduction des civils russes à l’état de troupeau, les viols, les marquages et autres meurtres ne furent, eux non plus, en aucun cas restreints aux chasseurs noirs. Tout au plus jouèrent-ils un rôle dans la diffusion de ces pratiques parmi les unités qu’ils côtoyèrent. Mais c’est bien l’ensemble des troupes engagées dans la lutte contre les partisans qui les adopta, même si les sociétés occidentales du XXe siècle, nazies ou non, voudraient, en conformité avec l’imaginaire du Sang noir, les restreindre aux braconniers et aux guerriers possédés, aux espaces forestiers et aux terres de confins 6.
La seconde question soulevée par l’essai d’anthropologie historique présenté ici est celle du lien entre prise de décision et pratiques de terrain. Ces incendies de villages, peuvent être tout aussi légitimement décrits comme l’aboutissement d’un processus rationnel de décision mêlant considérations de sécurité, objectifs de prédation économique, sélection des populations et contraintes physiques des troupes sur le terrain. Christian Gerlach le montre de manière magistrale : on brûle un village parce que ses habitants ont frayé avec des partisans, parce que l’on veut s’emparer des vaches, des cochons et des céréales, parce que l’on veut déporter les civils qui pourront travailler et ne pas nourrir les autres. On brûle des villages, enfin, parce que l’on en a reçu l’ordre 7.
Les deux systèmes interprétatifs ne sont pas antagonistes ; ils saisissent chacun une dimension du réel échappant à l’autre. Combiner les outils de l’histoire sociale et culturelle à l’analyse anthropologique du fonctionel et du symbolique, permet, me semble-t-il, d’articuler cette « histoire d’en haut » et cette « histoire d’en bas » qu’appellent les historiens allemands de leurs voeux.
Vue d’en haut, la lutte contre les partisans s’est agencée en quatre grandes périodes : durant le second semestre de 1941, les Allemands se contentèrent de contrôler les axes routiers des régions envahies, filtrant les flots de réfugiés et de soldats en fuite, et exécutant systématiquement ces derniers en les traitant comme des partisans. En réaction, ces soldats et unités en fuite se retranchèrent dans les territoires difficiles d’accès, où ils formèrent les noyaux des groupes de partisans. A partir de janvier 1942, le mouvement partisan se structurant, les Allemands entamèrent leurs opérations de ratissage, formant de vastes nasses dans lesquelles les unités de chasse tentaient d’accrocher les groupes de partisans, tout en exécutant quasi systématiquement les populations. A l’été 1942, ces opérations se rationalisèrent et combinèrent les objectifs précédents à des considérations économiques – prélèvement de denrées agricoles et de main-d’oeuvre. A partir de 1944, enfin, les Allemands changèrent de stratégie et recomposèrent la population entière de ces territoires. Déportant celle-ci, ils la remplacèrent par des villages armés peuplés de collaborateurs, parfois issus de minorités ethniques du Caucase, parfois – ce fut le cas dans certains secteurs d’Ukraine occidentale – par des minorités volksdeutsche venues des pays baltes, de la Volga ou de Bessarabie. Le combat antipartisan ressemblait désormais à un immense jeu de dominos ethnique.
L’anthropologie historique permet ainsi d’articuler l’historiographie classique des pratiques guerrières de l’état nazi et la Täterforschung, l’étude des comportements sur le terrain. Elle permet de comprendre qu’en bas, pour les acteurs de terrain, les opérations de ratissage furent tout à la fois des opérations de chasse des partisans et de parcage et d’abattage des populations civiles, et qu’elles constituèrent, vues d’en haut, pour les hiérarchies nazies, un instrument de mobilisation au service de l’effort de guerre, mais aussi, plus profondément, de remodelage d’une Europe qu’il fallait germaniser. Le chasseur, omniprésent vu d’en bas, se doublait ainsi en haut de l’ingénieur – social, statisticien, démographe, sociologue, raciologue.

There is a story that is still told today by the hunters of Carinthia, lovers of the Pirsch. It is the story of a legendary trophy, a great pale grey chamois, stuffed and shown in the Salzburg Haus der Natur. It is said that this beast was, like all white game, marked with the seal of invisibility, protected by the Salige Frau, that wild woman, the equivalent of Artemis, who lives on the slopes of the Austrian Alps, whose messenger it was. This exceptional chamois was killed August 27, 1913, by one of the most famous hunters of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este. But woe unto him who touched the Salige Frau's white game! Like Rudolf Franz Karl Joseph von Habsburg-Lothringen, found lifeless in Mayerling, or Alexander I of Serbia, assassinated in 1903, Franz Ferdinand died less than a year later, beneath the bullets of Gavrilo Prinzip, at Sarajevo. According to the Austrian hunters, the implacable punishment of this transgressor of the order of the Wild was at the source of the original catastrophe of the century of extremes. The Great War as an ordeal atoning for a transgressed taboo: such is, at heart, the belief of the Tyrolean hunters; a belief which closes the interpretative circle of war as a cynegetic event.1 For in the beginning was the Great War.
The cortege of desolation and death it left behind gave birth to Oskar Dirlewanger. He had the longest possible and most traumatic war, and this reality was inscribed on his body: wounded three times, he was one of that smallest minority of soldiers who survived wounds sustained in combat with cold steel. Few men, in short, have seen war at so close a range. "Dog of war"2 as he was, Dirlewanger never emerged from it, never managed to separate himself from that experience of life under fire which he transposed after November 1918 into an intense paramilitary activity taking him throughout Germany. An experience he transposed as well into völkisch, then into early Nazi political commitment. His doctoral thesis itself constituted a continuation of the war by other means, political, and on other battlefields, academic. Incapable of normalizing his behavior, he then fell into delinquency, financial or sexual.
Extreme illustration of the incapacity of German society to emerge from the lost war, to let go of the representation of a "world of enemies" colluding to bring it to ruin, Dirlewanger also embodied the inextricability of the bonds between cynegetic activity and military practice. All his military activity, in Lublin as in Belarus, in Southern Germany, was surrounded by the hunt. Beyond the comradeship born in the trenches, Dirlewanger shared with a man like Gottlob Berger a passion for the Pirsch and for the wolf hunt3 which they practiced together wherever the war took Dirlewanger between autumn 1940 and summer 1944. Landsknecht of another era and passionate hunter, Dirlewanger nevertheless had access to hierarchical connections far beyond those of the mere subaltern officer that he then was, obtaining direct access to Heinrich Himmler, Berger, or von dem Bach-Zelewsky. Pursuing, thanks to these connections, an intense lobbying campaign, Dirlewanger was the principal actor of the unit's development as it grew, in five years, from a commando of a few dozen men to a grenadier division. Between marginality and tenacity, Dirlewanger had thus built a unique career in the Black Order, a career in which militancy, war experience, and social connections mingled, a career inseparable from that of the unit to which he had given his name.
Made up of men perceived through the perspective of that hunting culture which made the Great War the direct consequence of the transgression of a taboo by the Archduke assassinated at Sarajevo, the Sonderkommando Oranienburg, soon the Sondereinheit Dirlewanger, was constantly viewed in frameworks outside "Nazi normality." Combining, to the eyes of dignitaries as eminent as Hitler or Himmler, cynegetic passion, unbridled violence, and the cruelty of Black Blood, the poachers of the unit were entrusted with the "pacification" and hunting of partisans – partisans assimilated, even before contact with them, to wild animals, prey to be tracked.
In Poland and in Belarus, those extremities of the millennial empire then taking form, the release of the violence that they "had in their blood" was necessary and desirable, while conveniently contained there. Having interiorized a discursive system saturated with representations of the Wild, of the threatening violence of Black Blood, of the hunt as metaphor for war and the image of the fevered warrior, these men established, under Dirlewanger's leadership, very specific gestures of war. To identify and track groups of partisans in the Belarusian forests was a form of war in perfect continuity with the hunting practices observed by ethnologists of the Pirsch. A war in which they were expected to express those cynegetic qualities that intimate communion with Black Blood granted them, in the eyes of their superiors as in those of the soldiers they fought beside.
The establishment, starting in January 1942, of sweeps in the form of enormous battues constituted the next step after the Pirsch, leading to egalitarian social relationships between the hunters and to practices of mass killing of trapped animals. To the selection-hunt represented by the Pirsch and reconnaissance, in which captured weapons, like partisan corpses, were seen as trophies, there was opposed the sweep operation, the collection-hunt, in which the success of the operation was expressed in spoils of farm produce, deported labor, and confiscated cattle. Far from functionally inevitable, this system results from cultural choices based on a specific imagination,4 adapted, according to Nazi leaders, to a war both new to them and in perfect conformity with the image they had constructed of their adversaries. It was because the enemy was reduced, in their eyes, to the level of wild animals that they envisaged trapping them or tracking them in small groups to the heart of their lairs. It is because the Polish and Russian partisans were a priori perceived as wild and cruel that SS leaders conceived the idea of creating a unit of poachers, of black hunters. Black they were because they wore, despite all denials by the SS, the uniform of the order; black they were because within the SS itself, they found themselves stigmatized for their cruelty and their communion with the world of the Wild.
The image of the Wild, however, cannot alone account for all the populations encountered by the unit.5 The Russian peasants of the villages in the operation zones and the Jewish prisoners of the labor camps shared certain characteristics different from those of the partisan groups. The latter were reputed to be cruel and dangerous; the others were inoffensive domestic "animals." All had been gathered – penned; some, the Jews especially, had been marked; all, finally, had been set to labor.
The scale thus reconstituted, leading from the Domestic to the darkest of the Wild, makes an element on one of its polarities correspond to its equivalent on the other – the dog and the wolf, the stag and the bull. It admits cases of going wild – rabies. Villages suspected of partisan collusion are seen as domestic animals threatened by a return to the savage state due to infection. To eradicate it, the black hunters took great care to spill as little blood as possible from their victims, blood symbolically become black and wild again: the cremation of the living corresponded to an exterminating and purifying imagination of domestic order. Thus, the black hunters behaved according to anthropological codes at once ancient, common to European cultures since prehistoric times, and clear enough to spread their effects throughout the security forces present in Belarus. It is by this standard that we may evaluate the mixture of esteem and reprobation enjoyed by the unit: innovative in its hunting activity (as seen by the "mine-clearing procedure" it developed) and cruel to the extreme in its behavior, even in the eyes of the security troops, the unit was constantly evaluated on the scale of the Wild and the Domestic. This discourse was used at once to stigmatize and to celebrate them. Several decades after the fact, it was still heard in the words of witnesses and accused alike in the investigations of Nazi crimes.
Constructed in constant tension with the daily observation of the real, this system of representations underwent a slow dissolution as German troops withdrew, and it grew unclear when the unit was sent to Slovakia and to Hungary. It was not merely the status of the victims that changed with each new displacement of the unit, but the nature of combat as well. This changed inexorably to a war of position in which the Russian assailant had an overwhelming human and material advantage. As time passed, the situation grew worse, and combat less and less like a hunt. Or rather, the black hunters felt less like trackers and more like prey. The unit let itself be annihilated where it stood rather than giving up ground to the Soviet flood that was submerging German territory, illustrating the general behavior of that desperate army that was the Ostheer in spring 1945. Of the six thousand recruits of the division, only fifty were still fit for combat on the morning of April 25. The rest, when they were not killed or wounded, were undergoing captivity, including penning up, marking, and enforced labor, a domestication exactly symmetrical with that which the black hunters had imposed on the Belarusian populations. The war practices and collective fates of the Dirlewanger unit are thus analyzable according to the imagination of the hunt and of the Wild, both in "victory" and in defeat.
Are we not in the presence of an extraordinary case forbidding all generalization? Yes, the unit is exceptional. But the question, like the answer, constitutes neither more nor less than a variant of that strategy of separation used by SS dignitaries or officials of the Belarusian civil administration, but also by witnesses and accused during investigations of Partisanenbekämpfung crimes. For everyone, yesterday as today, it is crucial to build a protective barrier between the black hunters and "ordinary men," just as it is crucial for European societies to separate the Domestic and the Familiar from the Wild.
If the black hunters and the condemned who populated the Sondereinheit Dirlewanger made it a socially unrepresentative unit, its practices of violence resembled in every detail those of other anti-partisan formations. Of the seven hundred villages burned in Belarus, the unit is far from being responsible for the majority of these devastations. Displacement of population, reduction of Russian civilians to the state of herded animals, rapes, markings, and other brutalities, these too were not in any way restricted to the black hunters. At most they played a part in spreading these practices among the units they mingled with. But all the troops engaged in anti-partisan action adopted them, even if western societies of the twentieth century, Nazi or not, would prefer, in accordance with the image of Black Blood, to restrict them to poachers and possessed warriors, to forest spaces and frontier territories.6
The second question raised by the present essay in historical anthropology is that of the relationship between decision and practice on the ground. These village burnings may be described with equal legitimacy as the end of a rational process of decision-making, combining security considerations, objectives of economic predation, population selection, and physical constraints of troops on the ground. Christian Gerlach shows this masterfully: one burns a village because its inhabitants have associated with partisans, because one wants to take its cows, pigs, and grain, because one wants to deport civilians who can work and not feed the others. One burns villages, finally, because one has been ordered to do so.7
The two interpretative systems do not cancel each other out; each captures a dimension of reality that escapes the other. To combine the tools of social and cultural history with the anthropological analysis of the functional and the symbolic, it seems to me, allows us to distinguish German historians' "history from above" and "history from below."
Seen from above, anti-partisan action had four major periods: during the second half of 1941, the Germans were content to control the main roads of the invaded regions, filtering the floods of refugees and fleeing soldiers, and systematically executing the latter as partisans. In reaction, these fleeing soldiers and units retrenched in hard-to-reach territories, where they formed the nuclei of partisan groups. Starting in January 1942, the partisan movement took form and the Germans began sweep operations, forming vast nets in which the hunt units attempted to catch the partisan groups, while almost systematically executing the populations. In the summer of 1942, these operations were rationalized, combining the preceding objectives with economic considerations – capture of agricultural products and labor. Starting in 1944, finally, the Germans changed strategy and recomposed the entire population of these territories. Deporting it, they replaced it by armed villages populated by collaborators, sometimes from ethnic minorities of the Caucasus, sometimes – this was the case in certain sectors of western Ukraine – by volkdeutsch minorities from Baltic countries, the Volga, or Bessarabia. Anti-partisan combat now resembled an enormous game of ethnic dominos.
Historical anthropology thus allows us to distinguish classic historiography of the military practices of the Nazi state and Täterforschung, the study of behavior on the ground. It allows us to understand that down below, for the actors on the ground, the sweep operations were at once a hunt for partisans and the penning and slaughter of civilian populations, and that they constituted, seen from above, for the Nazi hierarchy, an instrument of mobilization in the service of the war effort, but also, more deeply, the remodeling of a Europe in need of Germanization. The hunter, omnipresent when seen from below, was doubled above by the engineer – social, statistical, demographic, sociological, racial.

Il présentera des œuvres majeures dans tous les domaines de l’histoire de l’art, ouvert à toutes les périodes et les aires géographiques. Un grand musée du 21ème siècle qui deviendra certainement une référence scientifique et culturelle aux institutions muséales dans le monde. Ce grand projet unit, derrière le nom du Louvre, l’ensemble des grands musées français. Ils se sont, dès aujourd’hui, engagés dans la présentation Talking Art : Louvre Abu Dhabi, qui est inaugurée aujourd’hui. Cette exposition a été rendue possible grâce aux prêts d’œuvres majeures consenties par les grandes institutions françaises que je voudrais remercier ici. Texte source - français Au-delà d’une rencontre, Cornucopia est un univers partagé. Les œuvres de l’artiste prennent une dimension particulière au contact du Temple de la mer qui les accueille. Au détour des salles et des galeries, les objets de collection du Musée océanographique dialoguent avec les créations de Damien Hirst. Quelle parenté se noue entre les requins préparés par l’artiste et ceux récoltés par le Prince Albert Ier ? Quelle proximité se joue entre les papillons mis en scène par Damien et les collections de coquilles patiemment constituées ? Quelle similarité existe entre les écorchés de Cornucopia et les animaux naturalisés réalisés par les taxidermistes du Musée ?
Aujourd’hui centenaire le Musée océanographique est à la fois un centre de médiation scientifique internationalement reconnu et un formidable outil de diffusion et de partage des connaissances. Le Nouveau Musée National de Monaco prend, quant à lui, appui sur le riche passé culturel et artistique de la Principauté tout en s’ouvrant à la création contemporaine. Lieu d’échanges et de réflexions « en devenir », il trouve progressivement sa place aux côtés du Musée océanographique contribuant ainsi au rapprochement entre Art et Science tel que le souhaitait le Prince Albert Ier, il y a 100 de cela. L’alchimie entre deux institutions, aux histoires parallèles mais très différentes, se concrétise par l’exposition Cornucopia, première étape d’une nouvelle alliance culturelle entre le Musée océanographique et le Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
Il appartient désormais au public de puiser dans Cornucopia, corne d’abondance, et d’en retirer émotion, interrogation, surprise et émerveillement.

At a hundred years of age, the Oceanographic Museum is both an internationally recognized centre of scientific exchange and an important resource for the sharing and dissemination of knowledge. The New National Museum of Monaco, meanwhile, rooted though it is in the Principality’s rich cultural and artistic past, opens itself to contemporary artistic creation. As a focal point for inter-reaction and reflections “in progress”, it takes its place beside the Oceanographic Museum, contributing to the reconciliation of Art and Science envisioned by Prince Albert I one hundred years ago. The alchemy between two institutions with parallel but very different histories is concretely expressed by the exhibition Cornucopia, the first manifestation of a new cultural alliance between the Oceanographic Museum and the New National Museum of Monaco.
It is now the public’s turn to dig deep in Cornucopia, the horn of plenty – to pour out and savour its gifts of emotion, questioning, surprise and wonderment.
We are delighted to welcome the artist Damien Hirst to the Oceanographic Museum, 100 years old today and more alive than ever!

L’usage du coton apparaît à la fin du XIXème siècle et concerne le linge de table et les serviettes de bain. La nappe est essentiellement blanche et damassée, c’est à dire tissée de façon à faire apparaître des dessins par contraste de mat et de satiné. Elle est chiffrée et se part aussi de dentelles et de broderies. Assorties aux nappes, les serviettes de table sont chiffrées au centre au point de bourdon et doivent être suffisamment grandes pour couvrir les genoux. Elles sont au nombre de 12, parfois de 24 ou même de 36 pour permettre d’en changer au cours d’un même repas.
Après avoir été en lin et en chanvre, les serviettes de toilette en coton apparaissent lorsque le bain se démocratise. Elles sont souvent en nid d’abeille, un coton gaufré dont le tissage rappelle les alvéoles des essaims d’abeilles. Elles sont parfois soulignées de liteaux rouges ou bleus, sont chiffrés au point de bourdon, les plus anciennes sont bordées de franges.

Cotton began to be used in the late 19th century for table linen and bath towels. Tablecloths were white and damasked (woven to create patterns of matte and satin textures). They were marked and decorated with lace and embroidery. Matching their tablecloths, table napkins were marked in the middle with satin stitch and were large enough to cover the diner's lap. They came in sets of twelve, sometimes of 24 or 36 to allow them to be changed in the course of a meal.
Towels, originally made from linen and hemp, were produced in cotton as the bath became a democratic luxury. They are often in honeycomb cotton, a waffle weave suggesting the cells of a honeycomb. Il est possible de réaliser des mosaïques sur toutes sortes de supports : murs ou sols, objets de décoration, a plat ou en volume, meubles, etc. L'important est de bien préparer ces supports et de choisir la colle adaptée.
Bois
Achetez de préférence des bois traites contre l'humidité. Pour l'intérieur : aggloméré hydrofuge. Pour l'extérieur : contreplaque marine.
Il est recommande de griffer légèrement le bois au cutter pour une meilleure adhérence de la colle. Avant de recouvrir un meuble de mosaïques, décapez-le s'il est vernis ou peint. Cette opération étant assez fastidieuse, si le vernis ou la peinture semblent en bon état (cela peut se vérifier en grattant), vous pouvez vous contenter de poncer légèrement puis d'appliquer un primaire d'accrochage.
Lorsque le bois est décapé, il faut le protéger contre l'humidité de la colle et du joint : appliquez un bouche pore qui conservera au bois une légère porosité nécessaire a une bonne adhérence de la colle tout en le préservant des infiltrations.
Murs
Si le mur est couvert d'une peinture en bon état, appliquez simplement un primaire d'accrochage. S'il faut le décaper entièrement (opération de toute façon indispensable pour une mosaïque supérieure a 1m2), lissez le mur a l'enduit et appliquez un primaire d'accrochage.
Carrelages
Il est possible de coller une mosaïque sur un ancien carrelage : appliquez dessus un primaire d'accrochage. Ne vous souciez pas des interstices entre les carreaux : le ciment les comblera, annulant tout risque de dénivellation.
Pots en terre cuite
Si l'extérieur du pot n'est pas émaillé, il faut protéger la mosaïque de l'humidité en appliquant du vernis marin sur toute la surface intérieure. On collera ensuite directement la mosaïque sur la terre cuite.
Autres supports
Il est également possible de réaliser des mosaïques sur du verre et divers matériaux. Cela n'implique pas un traitement particulier du support mais des colles spéciales.

Mosaics can be applied to all kinds of surfaces: walls, floors, flat or three-dimensional decorative objects, furniture, etc. The important thing is to prepare your surface well and to choose the appropriate adhesive.
Wood
Use wood treated for water-resistance. For indoors, use waterproof particleboard. For outdoors, use marine plywood.
Score the wood lightly with a utility knife to ensure optimal adhesive binding. Strip varnished or painted furniture before covering it with mosaic. Since this is a time-consuming operation, if the varnish or paint seems to be in good condition (check by scraping), you may opt simply to sand lightly and apply a bonding primer.
When wood is stripped, it must be protected against the moisture of the glue and grout: apply a filler that will preserve a slight porosity so glue and grout adhere, but don't penetrate.
Walls
If your wall is painted and in good condition, simply apply bonding primer. If you need to strip the wall (obligatory for a mosaic larger than 1m2), plaster it smooth and apply a bonding primer.
Tile Floor
It is possible to apply mosaic over a tile floor; cover it with bonding primer first. Don't worry about the gaps between the tiles: the mortar will fill them and eliminate any risk of unevenness.
Earthenware pots
If the outside of the pot isn't glazed, the mosaic must be protected from moisture by applying spar varnish to the entire inside surface. The mosaic may then be glued directly to the earthenware.
Other surfaces
It is also possible to apply mosaics to glass and other materials. This doesn't require any particular treatment of the surface, but simply the use of special adhesives.
