Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jun 1, 2005:
Thanks Sormane, but there's the rub... the valances are all fabric...and in my text it's a structure, but your reference to the book... now that's convincing!!!!!!
Sormane Gomes Jun 1, 2005:
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
Right in my answer Marian: ***These valances are flat panels with tab tops***
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
Valences are either All Fabric OR a wood/metal or cardboard structure with cloth covering it.."upholstered"..they are various kinds of valances..this one is made of a Fabric- or cloth-covered panel. Good luck. Thanx for the confidence.
Non-ProZ.com Jun 1, 2005:
Jane, I was thanking Salvador because the definition is so helpful. I'm not convinced about valance... the only definitions I can find say that a valance is made of cloth... I know exactly what the Portuguese means now and just have to find some support for the English term... Canopy seems close but no cigar... If I saw a definition of valance that indicated it could be made of something other than cloth, that would help...
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
Marian: who are you thanking? I know a lot about decoration..these are called window valances in English. that is the decorating term in English. I really don't understand..
Non-ProZ.com Jun 1, 2005:
Salvador,

Great... thanks for the definition... I know exactly what they are now... I'm going to call and ask my Mom what they are called in English... I'm not much on decorating...
Non-ProZ.com Jun 1, 2005:
No Salo is not a ballroom... it's a big open space with dividers in a shed or warehouse...
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
If I had realized at the beginning of your questions that the description was of place "as it is", i would have suggested Ballroom for Salo because that is exactly what it seems to be...
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
what I mean is: that is what they are probably going to set up; what they have is the open space which they are calling a "salo"; maybe an old ball room type space....
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Jun 1, 2005:
FYI,,by salo they mean what is called in architecture/interior architecture: an open plan office..cheers

Thanx AmyD
agree Sormane Gomes : This is it, for sure...I have a book on how to make curtains, valances, etc right in front of me. Like you said, valances are either all fabric or a wood/metal structure with cloth covering it.
