Note from asker:
Thanks, liz. I actually found this myself, but I cannot see how it fits in: The hall christening? It's on a list of publicity advantages for sponsors of an international IT exhibition.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Berni Armstrong : While you are right, strictly speaking . "Christen" is considered too culture specific in our current global, multicultural reality.

You cannot deny the meaning of the word though. And we don't all have a multicultural mentality, do we. I should know, having interpreted for many different nationalities, who wish to maintain their own individual identities, religion and cultures.

name / NAMING

One of the important things for a sponsor is to ahve his name added to an event or place:

e.g. the Porsche Jazz Festival, the Cacaolat Championship, the Jupiler Cup, the Google room, etc. This way they baptize an event or place.
Note from asker:
Many thanks, etienne. In the end I used liz' option.
Peer comment(s):

agree Berni Armstrong : I'd have translated this: "The possibility of naming a hall" - "Christen" has too many cultural specific overtones to be used widely in a multicultural world.

neutral liz askew : Had you read my contribution, you would see the asker was given this alternative.
