Spanish term

manto de tosca

Spanish to English Science Agriculture
I´m workin on the translation of a project to enhance tillage systems and I don´t know how to translate this phrase. Below, you can find some context:
Thanks a lot for your help

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Richard Boulter Apr 14, 2009:
'Hardpan' is jargon' 'Hardpan' is the word that I hear most often in this context when folks are talking about soil compaction vs. water perforation, but the word seems to be definitely informal, perhaps jargon within the discipline of geology. 'Calcrete' may be the technical term for it, when it is caused by high lime content in the soil.

If the context shows that the mantle is composed of volcanic rock in this text, then 'hardpan' would not apply. 'Volcanic soils', as in mantles of volcanic ash overlying other types of soil, can be excellent for growing crops on the surface. Some types of volcanic ash can also be compressed into impermeable hardpan at depths in the earth above the aquifer (or below it, for that matter).

'Mantle' seems more commonly used than 'layer' in subterranean geological references of this type, in my experience.

Here manto de tosca is referred to as calcretes.
Ashwin Goud Apr 14, 2009:
The text is about a semi arid region Hence, i think it is calcrete layer which inhibits the proper growth of crops. I dont know if in volcanic soils wheat could be grown?
