liz askew Mar 22, 2010:
hmm...problem is on that Croatian site it says "defectation AND repair"...so ? I think we need a native Spanish speaker on this one to be 100% sure here, hopefully from Cuba.
erowe Mar 22, 2010:
Reading the Croatian link, it seems that defectacion means repair i.e. removing faults.
margaret caulfield Mar 22, 2010:
Mmmm... one link is from Lithuania and the other from Croatia.

can't vouch for the English.

Thanks Margaret. Yes, I take your point. Thank you :)
margaret caulfield Mar 22, 2010:
Knowing that it's a Cuban term makes me even more convinced since the Cubans have a tendency to "americanize" Spanish words.
margaret caulfield Mar 22, 2010:
Lisa, I get the exact opposite impression considering the word itself: "defectar". It's like "giving something defects". Also, fault-finding meetings are quite common, especially in manufacturing companies as opposed to service companies.
XXXphxxx (X) (asker) Mar 22, 2010:
Rachadura Yes, agreed on 'rachadura' but 'ción' is just not a Portuguese ending.
liz askew Mar 22, 2010:
Interesing what you say though as I can only find "rachadura" as a Portuguese word...hmm.
liz askew Mar 22, 2010:
This is the only other thing I can find....

to fault-find/fault-finding

This is only an educated guess, but this is what it sounds like to me, i.e. to find defects, which is normally called "fault-finding".
Note from asker:
Thanks Margaret. At the moment my inclination is that it's a way of saying 'repair' as that seems to make the most sense in the context of various hits on Google. Not at all sure though...
I'm fairly certain it's a Cuban term. Any Cubans out there?
Peer comment(s):

agree liz askew : or fault-detection, based on my own findings. Wait for a Cuban to appear, fingers crossed.......
