Pie (in Spanish) as a measurment Is the quantity of wood in a piece with a surface of one square feet and one inch thick. It is used for budgeting purposes, without detailing sizing of individual pieces. If it is a line item in a budget, Gilla's post makes sense for me.

Hi Noni, I didn't want to query your answer because it certainly could be that. I posted my discussion point just to make sure the asker looks into it carefully, because "pie de madera" seems to be so widely used as a specific measurement. I wanted to sound a cautionary note. And then, of course, there's "madera en pie" which is something else altogether, and wouldn't be appropriate here! But it all adds to potential confusion...

Measurement Planks of wood are/were indeed measured in feet and inches, and there are standard sizes (I can still hear our carpenter talking about "two bi fours" or the like!), but since Giovanna posted in singular and described it as an item, then I headed off in another direction! A quantity of wood would be a quantity of feet... Perhaps Giovanna can enlighten us!

I'm not sure what the equivalent is in English, which is why I discussing it here rather than posting an answer. I hope it might point you in the right direction.
