rejas

I thought perhaps they were talking about the bars on balconies, but that's not possible. Here's another sentence from later in the same news item:
"...se prevé de nuevo una alta participación de patios, balcones y rejas que reúnan las necesarias condiciones de conservación y cuidado..."

I think perhaps they mean those entrances which have railings, but am not entirely sure how to put this. Anyone got a term for this in UK Eng which denotes the garden/patio element? Of course, just putting railings will not work...
Thanks very much in advance. :)

Discussion

Kate Major Patience (asker) Jun 3, 2010:
I've commented on dekken's answer below that I agree with him too, but there are also those "cancelas" or "portales", like entrances to houses, which have "rejas" but aren't window displays. I think they would probably be included in the category. Where I live (on the side of a ravine in Granada capital) there are many houses with various varieties of "rejas", including entrances and the typical window displays dekken mentions below... Benicàssim is a mix of houses and apartments... I agree with you too, Noni, that it would be nice to convey the sense of the railings forming part of the "conjunto"...

I agree with dekken's comments, but window display doesn't quite convey the particulary Spanish image including the rejas. My mother's geranium display stops the tourists in their tracks in their small Levante town, but no photos on the web that I know of!!!
Kate Major Patience (asker) Jun 3, 2010:
More context "Las bases prevén tres categorías distintas: patio tradicional, patio terraza moderno y balcón o reja."

grilles

Just a shot. Otherwise, I see them as dekken's "railings". It just occurs to me that these are not just on windows, and in some cases are used as trellises (for jasmine or bougainvilla, for example).
Peer comment(s):

agree amendozachisum : agree, it is generic enough to convey the meaning and you could add artistic grill or something to that effect

agree franglish : to include the decorative element one could say wrought-iron grilles

Note from asker:
Thanks Rick, but I am looking for a term that fits the context above (gardening competition). As I mention above, though I know what "rejas" means in general terms, of course, "railings" will not work here.

window display

Of course "rejas" means railings, usually protecting the windows in village houses, but here they are referring to a competition for the prettiest flower/garden diplays. It is common for pots of geraniums to be placed behind the rejas on the window ledge.
Window box display could be another possibility perhaps.

or window/balcony presentation.
Note from asker:
Yes, more likely to be those windows with the outside ledge and railings: I know what you mean. I was thinking of those houses which have like a "portal" or "cancela", often with plants inside like an entrance area, but I know Benicàssim a little, and it also has a lot of apartment villages like any other Med coast town, perhaps more than houses.... Thanks dekken.
Peer comment(s):

agree Nikki Graham : Yes, the rejas are the bars on the windows, so window would be best here, IMHO

Thanks Nikki, I agree it would be nice to include a reference to the rejas, but I can't think of one just now without making it too long.
agree Jenni Lukac (X) : This is probably the closest description that makes sense in English.

Thank you Jenni
neutral franglish : Not limited to windows and balconies; it includes the courtyards.

courtyards are a separate category in the competition, I gather from Kate's context

window boxes

Not an exact match but a cultural equivalent. In England this displays are usually referred to as window boxes whether they are in a box or not.

The idea is transposed to the displays of flowers behind the window railings in Spanish villages:

After Ronda your tour takes you to Grazalema, a pretty mountain village, set in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and surrounded on three sides by mountains. Its steep cobbled streets are lined with white whitewashed houses whose window boxes bringing a splash of colour to this lively little village.

with stepped roofs and cheerful window boxes on the outskirts of the traditional mountain village of Molló.
