English term

for total score assuming a SD of

English to French Science Mathematics & Statistics
Le contexte:
"In order to ensure interpretability of the difference between groups, these will be assumed to be at least equal to the minimal important difference of the scale; corresponding value is 3 for total SDS score assuming a SD of 5.6"
Merci beaucoup.

Discussion

Michael Mestre Jun 27, 2010:
Assumption ? It probably seems obvious to everyone, but I am having a doubt.
Is the subject of the verb "to assume" clear ?
Are there indications in the source text that the SD of the distribution is inferred ("assumed"), and not measured from the distribution of the different SDS scores ?

I may be confused about the meaning of the SDS score, in that case all apologies.. (is there really a distribution of different SDS scores, to begin with, or just one ?)
SJLD Jun 24, 2010:
There is no mention of statistical significance. The "important" probably means clinically significant or meaningful.
Tally Fenney Jun 24, 2010:
What I understand from the text is that a difference of 3 on the SDS (whatever that is) is statistically significant based on the assumption that the standard deviation is 5.6

L'écart-type de groupe dépend de l'écart-type individuel; la valeur de 3 pour le groupe est donc donnée compte tenu de la supposition que la valeur individuelle est 5,6 -- Est-ce que cela rend les choses plus claires?

The total SDS score is likely to be something completely different and not related at all the standard deviation. The context should tell you what it should be, there are several possibilities. For exemple Standard Difference Score
