While I respect everybody's opinion and, in this case, choice (Lisa's), I must admit, when I saw the answer chosen, I felt rather sad... that's the only word I can find to describe it. "Guisantes ahogadas a la catalana" are much more attractive and appetizing than plain old "Catalan stewed peas". Also, who said the peas were Catalan? They could be from anywhere! They're simply cooked Catalan-style. As said, I respect your choice, Lisa, but I still find it sad and I wanted to state my opinion.

Different recipes are used for this dish, depending on the area in Catalonia - Barcelona, Gerona, Tarragona, Lerida and the Balearic Islands. Bacon is not always used. This is why I did not give the ingredients as such. Peas with ham is normally referred to as "Guisantes a la francesa".

Yes Noni a more descriptive word would be great but it does sound odd in English...the words smothered, soused, drizzled, dewy and submerged came to mind but not sure they are appropriate so will agree with Margaret.

ahogados = rehogados As I suspected, so this is a variation on guisantes con jamón....

Catalan stewed peas

they're cooked in a covered pan with liquid - not what I call sauteing
I think "stewed" is fine for such dishes.

It’s 4pm. The meal is served at a Spanish hour. The stewed peas and suquet de peix (fish soup) plates are presented simply, but have a sophisticated, irresistible taste. The crema catalana rounds up with a dish which represents a certain symbol in contemporary Spanish cooking: avant-garde in its preparatory techniques, but without losing the essence of products coming from the Catalan earth.

agree Evans (X) : we recently had a long and involved (and slightly overheated) discussion on Proz in French/English on the use of "stewed" in a very similar circumstance. My vote was for "stewed" then and is now.

Aunque "ahogados" suena a que lleven un montón de aceite, de hecho solo son salteados.

braised peas a la catalana/Catalan braised peas

this sounds better to my ear - I associate 'stewed peas' with West Indian cooking :)
