español term

casi cuatro veces

español al inglés Ciencias sociales Educación / Pedagogía
la posesión de los estudios superiores de la madre reducía casi cuatro veces las probabilidades de abandono escolar de las jóvenes españolas

An academic research paper on school drop-out. Would I right in using "by a factor of four"? Thanks.

Discussion

FVS, submit it as an answer. I'd vote for it.
FVS (X) Mar 4, 2011:
I intensely dislike this modern trend to say '4 (etc) times less likely' when what is meant is 25%, or a quarter, of the likelihood etc. But it seems to have entered the language.

I would say 'reduce the likelihood (probability) of...... by three quarters, or 75%.

The new usage always makes me thing 'four times what????'.

But then I'm old-fashioned.

almost fourfold

may even satisfy "old-fashioned" readers!
Example sentence:

Through different preventive measures, endemic N. gonorrhoeae is almost eliminated, and C. trachomatis has been reduced almost fourfold in Sweden

Note from asker:
Thanks Joss, While also agreeing with "four times less likely", your suggestion works very well for me in the context- it's more manageable

agree FVS (X) : Grudgingly. Think Victor Meldrew and if you don't know who he is you are missing a large chunk of life experience.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much to everybody. While totally agreeing with "four times less likely", "fourfold" works better for me this time as I have to give several probabilities in the same line of text. "

four times less likely

I think I would probably say something like "are four times less likey to drop out ..."

by about four times

So that you can keep the same Spanish verbs and render the same meaning in English I would use by about for casi....

This suits the language of statistics when precision is not required.

It is a tricky difficult translation that requires many changes to make it soung English. Transforming the sentence from a passive to an active sentence is necessary. ie. la posesión de los estudios... may be better at the end of sentence.
Also:
la posesión de los estudios superiores de la madre - simply: the fact that (the) mother had gone to high school...
reducía casi cuatro veces - reduced (their) chances by about four times...

Example sentence:

Ser niña aumenta las probabilidades de quedarse sin escolarizar.

A girl heightens the probability of not being in school.
