The term биокосная система was introduced by Vernadsky in 1944, a unified system formed by living organisms and their environment. It is ofen used now as a synonym of ecosystem. The term биокосное вещество (тело) was introduced by Vernadsky into biogeochemistry in 1926, matter occurring as a result of the combined activity of organisms and abiogenic processes (water, soil, regolith, atmosphere). Decades ago I called it bioinert matter for the lack of a better term. But now IMHO it should be called biotic/abiotic matter. See discussion
