The term биокосная система was introduced by Vernadsky in 1944, a unified system formed by living organisms and their environment. It is ofen used now as a synonym of ecosystem. The term биокосное вещество (тело) was introduced by Vernadsky into biogeochemistry in 1926, matter occurring as a result of the combined activity of organisms and abiogenic processes (water, soil, regolith, atmosphere). Decades ago I called it bioinert matter for the lack of a better term. But now IMHO it should be called biotic/abiotic matter. See discussion

You can find the terms in the Russian Ecological Encyclopedic Dictionary, I. I. Delyu, Glav. red. Moldav. Sovet. Entsiklopedii. 1989, more than 8000 terms, 406 pages, the given terms are on p. 34. биокосная среда, p. 294, is defined as edaphic environment, soil as a factor of the environment of microorganisms, plants, and animals.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Biotic and abiotic factors are interrelated. If one factor is changed or removed, it impacts the availability of other resources within the system.

Biotic Factors
Biotic, meaning of or related to life, are living factors. Plants, animals, fungi, protist and bacteria are all biotic or living factors.

Abiotic Factors
Abiotic, meaning not alive, are nonliving factors that affect living organisms. Environmental factors such habitat (pond, lake, ocean, desert, mountain) or weather such as temperature, cloud cover, rain, snow, hurricanes, etc. are abiotic factors.

A System
Biotic and abiotic factors combine to create a system or more precisely, an ecosystem. An ecosystem is a community of living and nonliving things considered as a unit.
