Puede ser A branch of the Army??

that saw a particular tendency within the army gain power which aimed to

"Corriente" here seems to mean a "tendency" or "point of view" within the army. It certainly does not refer to a "branch" of the army!

Suerte.

neutral patinba : I think it is more "a move within the army" than a separate faction, and the neutrality being mentioned could refer to the Spanish Civil War which began with a coup in 1934

The military coup in Spain, starting the Spanish Civil War, was in 1936. "1934" may just be a slip of the pen by Susiq.
agree Marcelo González : nice rendering; "a faction WITHIN the army" is commonly used as well
