I can't give any context as it is part of a list of "tareas preliminares" but I think that the general idea is "excavation for levelling of the terrain". Any ideas? Many thanks

Hi, Lynne This is common earthmoving terminology and would be basically the same on any railway, roadway, or any industrial or civil works project as long as it involves earthworks. "Desmonte" (cut) is where you excavate because the projected level is below the natural ground level. "Terraplén" (fill/embankment) is where you have to place soil over the natural ground because the planned grade is above its level. In this document (http://www.docstoc.com/docs/74835987/METHOD-STATEMENT-FOR-EA... "excavación en desmonte" is referred as "excavation of cuttings" (Section C on page 4). There is another activity called "excavation for site leveling" (section D on page 5), which would be "excavación para nivelación" in spanish, which usually involves a shallow excavation and grading to obtain the final planned level.

No this definitely has nothing to do with railways. As far as I can gather they are preparing the terrain for an oil refinary. But this is the first file I have received and I don't have much context

EXCAVACIÓN EN DESMONTE Y EXPLANACIÓN. Es el conjunto de operaciones para nivelar y desmontar el terreno en el que ha de asentarse una obra o para extraer de préstamos las tierras necesarias para ejecutar un terraplén

Ror rail tracks, demonte means a cut or cutting. In general, desmontar refers to digging to clear and level.

You will have to consider which term to use based on the other terms of the list and how you are translatingthose terms. "Desmonte" in spanish means "cut", as opposed to "fill" ("terraplen"). "Excavación en desmonte" refers to excavating operations on cut sections of the roadway (not specifically to level the terrain). All these are earthworks (movimientos de tierra) activities. The terminology may be different from one country or region to another. Here you have a couple of documents in english about the subject:

Sergio, de verdad que creo que tú has sido el que ha puesto más empeño en esto y me gusta mucho lo de excavation of cuttings pero Lanna ha puesto una respuesta muy similar y me encuentro en un aprieto. Así que me temo que voy a tener que darle los puntos a ella. Créeme que lo siento
