German term

Maschinenhauer

German to English Tech/Engineering Mining & Minerals / Gems
From a work reference (Zeugnis)

Nach dem erfolgreichen Abschluss der Facharbeiterprüfung wurde xxx in ein bis zum yyy befristetes Arbeitsverhältnis übernommen und als Maschinenhauer im Untertagebereich eingesetzt.

This is NOT a typo for Maschinenbauer!

Any help greatly appreciated ... my ideas so far include a machinist for the field of mining or an underground miner, however I am very uncertain

TIA for any help
Stephen

Here is another reference that might be helpful

I think "face worker" is the better of the two options I proposed, because it makes it more clear that it refers to the person and not to the machine that he uses. (Also, it is clear that, these days, the only people regularly working in a mine with non-power tools like pickaxes are the 7 dwarves :)

Very kind but I had also found that - it still doesn't really help me with the English terminology unfortunately though

Another possibility, and maybe a better one, is "face worker" http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/exhibit/coal/miners lives/...

If you check with Wikipedia, you will find a description in German, which is also rendered in English (look for English in the left column). At least, this will help you describe what the job involves.
