Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general) Medical report as part of legal documents
Hi,

I'm translating a court report from Spanish for Spain to British English. A medical report has been attached and the phrase above is causing me some issues. Please see the sentence below for full context:

INSTITUTO DE MEDICINA LEGAL DE CANTABRIA
DIRECCION: CANTABRIA
DEMARCACION: MEDIO CUDEYO

I was thinking along the lines of 'Region', but I'm not really sure at all. Could someone help please?

Many thanks!

Region

In the UK sense of "Regional Authority responsable for whatever it's about" ...
The term corresponds to the lexical ítem "Directorate" or "Executive", or similar bodies.

The literal translation of the Spanish term 'Autonomous Community' is not widely used outside Europe, where official terminology still refers to the regions, AFAIK.

Sorry, I meant it's not widely used outside of SPAIN.

agree James A. Walsh : Was just about to post "Regional Authority", but then noticed you'd posted this, which I think is better.

neutral Robert Carter : I don't think it has anything to do with the region or even the address in any way, it probably just means "office".

Address

I can only assume that it means what is says, "address", i.e. this, I imagine, is what it says on the cover or first page of the report attached.

A report may be issued by any number of bodies, agencies, medical associations in this particular case, insurance company experts, and even individuals (specific physicians who've been involved).

If the report is from a particular sugeon I'm sure the full address would be entered.

As it is, and if it's one of a kind as is the case, whoever filled it in probably felt a bit daft pointing out that the "INSTITUTO DE MEDICINA LEGAL DE CANTABRIA" is actually in Cantabria but couldn't bring themselves to leave a blank space.

I'm discarding "department" or suchlike on the same basis.

I can't see it as anything but.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Richard Vranch : It's Dirección General, I.e. General Directorate

BRANCH

I THINK IT REFERS TO THE BRANCH OR OFFICE WITHIN THAT PARTICULAR REGION
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Carter : Yes, that makes the most sense. Actually thinking about it, it could even mean the head office.

Autonomous Community / Province

I think in this case the term they have used is not specific at all, but it clearly refers to the Autonomous Community, the Province, or in other countries, the State.
The following term ("Demarcación") is specifying the location within the province (Medio Cudeyo is a village in Cantabria, Spain).

I hope it helped!

Regional Authority

This is about an office/an entity having the authority to act on behalf of a region. So I think Regional Authority would work well here.

agree Richard Vranch : I like Directorate as it's close to the original in full "Dirección General de ..." that each agency has in each CC.AA

thanks Richard, but there are "directorates" underneath a "Directorate-General" (cf. the European Commission structure)
