Spanish term

Una historia \"cocido a fuego lento\"

Spanish to English Marketing Food & Drink
For an marketing pitch about a new petfood product. The introduction states that it is an "historia cocido a fuego lento", obviously metaphorically portraying the idea as having been thought through and developed over time but using a cooking expression since the product in question is food. All I can come up with right now is "A story that's been simmering for some time" but I don't think that gets across the right idea. I need some idioma that relates to cooking or food but also gets across the concept that it's an idea that's been developed carefully.

Discussion

Dan Echevarria (asker) Nov 21, 2017:
They're referring to the marketing concept they have come up (the name, the positioning in the market, the branding etc). This is the "story". Thanks!
Lisa McCarthy Nov 21, 2017:
Hi Dan Can you provide any other context - for example, what is the 'story', or are they actually referring to 'history'?

Our slow-cooked recipe for success

Another option that I feel works well in this context.

Many thanks, Rachel.
agree JudyK : I like James's idea of 'recipe for success' and another suggestion would be "a carefully concocted recipe..."

Thank you, Judy. I also like your suggestion, though I think I would avoid "concoct" here, as I can't get away from the negative connotations of the word (e.g., to concoct a story or excuse, etc.)
agree philgoddard : I still don't fully understand the context (who is pitching to whom?), but this is a good idea if it fits.

Thanks, Phil. I guess it's the classic scenario of a seller (the pet food maker) pitching to a buyer...
agree Katie Auffinger : I like this option - both the "recipe for success" part which expands the food analogy and "slow-cooked."

Thanks very much, Katie.

a story cooked on a slow flame

I don't see anything wrong with a literal translation. Lots of references to "cooked on a slow flame," especially in reference to Indian cuisine:

neutral Wendy Streitparth : If BE is required, it would be a "low flame" / Yes, I appreciate it is used in America, but in England it is not so usual.

We took our time to make sure we got it right

I’d go for something along these lines. I think it important to guard against going over the top with the language here. After all, the pitch is not for some gourmet delicacy or a three-starred Michelin restaurant - but for pet food!

(Note: “a history/historia” and not “an history/historia”)

neutral Lisa McCarthy : It's marketing, Robert - supposed to be a bit catchy ;-)

But there may be better ways of expressing this - depends on how the rest of the text is written.

neutral Robert Forstag : I think that “brewing” would be a better fit for coffee or beer than for pet food.... 😊

Yes, but a marketing idea/story can be 'brewing' - it still gives the idea that something has been given thought over a long time. And it's much more interesting to use an idiom here.

Our tried and tested recipe for success

I think James' recipe for success is a good fit but to me none of the cooking, slow cooking, brewing and stewing ideas work with the idea of pet food although used in the Spanish.
In this case tried and tested could give the idea of a formula that has been developed and adjusted over time and it is a common collocation with recipe.

agree Robert Forstag : I agree with you that notions such as “slow-cooked,” “stewed,” ”brewed,” etc. really do not work as applied to pet food. “Tried and tested” recipe is an improvement over any of these.
