Discussion

neilmac (asker) Dec 5, 2018:
Abbreviations Are as Charles said. The authors have just made them up for the purposes of their study, but in this case I'm not changing them, because they appear in auxiliary material (tables and figures) , some of which may be awkward to modify.
Charles Davis Dec 5, 2018:
Not sure about the E... But surely NT = No dar la Talla, TM = Trabajar Mucho, PS = Proceso de Selección... and QM = Quedar Mal.
Noni Gilbert Riley Dec 4, 2018:
Multiple interpretations I agree about the difficulty here.

I would be very surprised if you hadn't already given us any available info, but I have to ask: do we know what ENT, ENM etc mean?
neilmac (asker) Dec 4, 2018:
My first thought was: "Fear of looking bad in front of others"... but "quedar mal" can mean so many different things.

fear that they will look bad to others

Sometimes people, including future employers, blame those who are unemployed for their status, even though it might not be their fault that they are.

Note from asker:
My first thoughts too…

fear of losing face

One meaning of 'quedar mal' is 'losing face'.

"fear of losing face in front of others"
Note from asker:
I usually associate "losing face" with Yakuza, samurai or the Mafia :)

Fear of failing (them)

Another option:
Fear of not coming through (for them)

Example sentence:

The job seemed easy but it was not. I failed them.

Note from asker:
Another interesting take…
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Carter : Yes, "quedar mal" is often meant this way in Mexico. I was about to post "fear of letting others down" when I saw yours.

Thanks a million! Yes, i had thought about that too but it could also be taken as not meeting their expectations and i saw in that a slight but meaningful difference

(Fear of) making a bad impression on others.

(Fear of) not getting along with new colleagues, bosses, etc.
What an impression they will have of me.

You can read the pdf about this in the link:
revistas.uned.es/index.php/reop/article/download/79/67

In the text in Spanish it is missing precisely this phrase, but it is further down in English, page 81.
Example sentence:

Factors are named fear of failure, fear of overwork, fear of selection processes, fear of not being able to develop one’s talent at work, fear of unknown future and fear of making a bad impression on others.

Note from asker:
Thanks. I think I'm going to use "Fear of making a bad impression"...
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Carter : Good research, although Tomás already posted "fear of making a bad impression".
