Spanish term

buques de altura y gran altura

Spanish to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime Marine
Hi everyone,

I have come across the phrase "buques de altura y gran altura". The text is not a specialist text on anything sea or marine-related, it appears in a text on religious practice in Spain. The phrase it appears in is "... de la larga estancia en alta mar en el caso de los buques de altura y gran altura." A couple of sentences before, "la actividad maritimo-pesquera" is mentioned and also people who work in the fishing industry.

I have researched a little and have found "tall ship", "ocean-going ship" and "seagoing ship" as translations for "buque de altura", but have not found a definitive answer and cannot relate "buque de gran altura" to these.

Thanks in advance,

Zosia

off-shore and ocean-going vessels

The test seems to refer to vessels spending a long time at sea and makes a distinction (not usually found) between vessels sailing outside coastal waters and those that travel much further. Many fishing boats fish off shore but some work in the Antartic and other distant seas. These would be gran altura.
That's what I woul put, anyway.
