I'm trying to decipher an old Polish death record from 1822. There is one section that is difficult to figure out: "...i oświadczyli nam iż w drodze za Żychlinem [z okazji a mar---ią] się w Wodzie dnia trzynastego bieżącego miesiąca i Roku o godzinie dziesiątej przed południem Umarł Michał N..." The part in brackets is only my best guess. I'm guessing the deceased was found dead on the road (near?) Żychlin...in the water, but that's about the best I can do. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

@Andrzej Andrzej, ja zaoferowałem Askerce pomoc w odczytaniu tego dokumentu (bo bardzo lubię głowić się nad starymi rękopisami) i dostałem od niej skan tego dokumentu. Stąd wiem, że sprawa miała miejsce 13 marca 1822 r. Mogło być cholernie zimno :)

@ Andrzej Mierzejewski The document dates from mid-March 1822, so it very well could have been cold. I agree that there is no way to extract the details of his end from this short phrase, but I'm grateful to you and Robert Foltyn for your help in clarifying this phrase for me!

" z okazji z maczania się w Wodzie" could mean: he fell into water... - whatever water the author meant, whether a river or just a small and shallow puddle in the road. If the temperature was low (what month?), that could be a sufficient reason for getting cold etc. until the sad end. We will never know the details.

Just found this in "Słownik Gwar Polskich" (1906): "Peplać się = maczać się, nurzać się, pluskać się w wodzie..." So maybe the deceased died "on the road past Żychlin, having immersed himself (or plunged) into the water on the thirteenth day of the current month and year..."

@ Robert Foltyn Thank you! I appreciate and agree with your interpretation. However, it still looks like "z maczania" to me, since I can't see another "a" in there... :-)

@ Andrzej Mierzejewski I found a better copy of the record. Line 5 now looks more like this to me: "w drodze za Żychlinem z okazji z maczania się w Wodzie..." Does that help any?

„w drodze” może również znaczyć that this person has died/passed "during the trip", or "while travelling" near or around Żychlin ...
