Spanish term

asientos

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Castilian Spanish -> English. In a technical document about foundations (especially slab) the word "asiento" is used quite a bit. I cannot figure out if "settlement" or "seat" would be better in these examples, as I don't fully understand their meaning.

Please help.

Discussion

Charles Davis Mar 23, 2019:

settlement

"Settlement is an important criterion in the design of the foundations. It is classifying into immediate (or elastic) settlement and consolidated settlement (primary and secondary). The factors that affect the shallow foundation settlement are the applied loads, soil stiffness, and geometric shape
of foundation. Calculations of settlement depend on the parameters of soil which can be obtained from field and laboratory tests"

agree Hugh Thomson : Settlement is the usual term in EN-UK. Its prediction is one of the principal reasons for carrying out a soils investigation.

bearings

Bearing: an object, surface, or point that supports

"1) ...a ground level below which significant bearings will not be developed due to the loads that may be transmitted by the building"...

IATE offers"settlement/consolidation/subsidence", which might also work. I like "bearing" because of the implicit association with "load-bearing" construction.
