Spanish term

Fecha de Validación

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Pathology
The only 2 dates appearing in the header section a lab report for study of a prostectomy specimen are "Fecha de Recepcion" and "Fecha de Validación". Normally I would translate this as "Validation Date" or "Date of Validation" but this doesn't seem to make sense to me in this case. I would also normally have expected to see a report date or examination/study/test date included. I'd appreciate any comments and/or suggestions. Cheers, John.

Chema Nieto Castañón Apr 8, 2020:
@phil You are definitely right that I haven't been able to find a reference explaining or supporting my answer. This is just one of those everyday things in a hospital. The technician and the lab physician get a sheet with lab results (creatinine x, glucose x, etc.). That is actually the lab report. But it needs being "validated" (confirmed, checked, verified) by the lab technician/physician for the report to get through to the requesting provider. And so the "fecha de validación" represents actually the moment the lab report is physically sent to the requesting physician (result reporting date). As for translation I simply recommend to explicitly state what it conveys (result reporting) rather than its raw meaning (lab technician/physician result verification date/time). If anything, "validación" vs. "expedición (del informe)" stresses the fact that lab results do not show up automatically from a machine directly to the requester, but that there is "human participation" (checking, confirming machine results, sometimes adding comments or manual readings as for correction, etc.) before finally reporting.

Well, wonder if it makes sense.

¡Saludos!

Thanks Nieto for the thorough explanation. I think, based on the information provided, that you are right and "Result Reporting Date" is the intended meaning in this case, although I also agree with Phil's point.
Chema Nieto Castañón Apr 8, 2020:
Result reporting Result reporting. That is what "validación" (implicitly) conveys in this case. The concept in Spanish would be that of a "visto bueno"; either a lab technician or both, a lab technician and a lab physician, send out their results after confirming those are alright. This confirmation implies the technician or the physician are immediately sending out the results. Today, this is done automatically; when the lab technician/physician presses the "validar informe" button, the results are sent to the requesting provider.

And so it is not really an exam/test date (those are internal lab times, from beginning to end of process) but the very last step from a lab perspective -which is equivalent, from a practical point of view, to the result report date.
Neil Ashby Apr 7, 2020:
I agree with Lester - it's probably "examination/test date".
And also with Phil - we don't have enough info to be sure.
Lester Tattersall Apr 7, 2020:
I suspect "Fecha de validación" is what you said you'd expect to see: examination/study/test date.

Result Reporting Date/Time

... from sample collection to result reporting.

Thanks for the thorough explanation Nieto.

disagree philgoddard : Sorry, but your reference simply doesn't support your answer. That's validation, not "issuing a report".

Yes, I know; just wanted to be clear as to what "validación" means here. What I explain after that comes from my own clinical experience; the second date/time on a clinical lab report correspond, from a practical point of view, to result reporting.

condiciones adecuadas.

validation date

We don't know what is being validated - it could be the samples before they're tested, or the test results before they're sent out. Either way, I don't think it's your problem, and I don't see how else you could translate it.
Note from asker:
Thanks Phil. Good point. In the end I decided to go with Nieto's suggestion in this case.
