Spanish term

talleres puntuales

Spanish to English Science Education / Pedagogy Primary science education
Actualmente xxxxxxxx ofrece talleres puntuales, han creado los clubs de ciencia extraescolares, campamentos urbanos en vacaciones o campamentos con pernocta en verano.

I think it could be one-off workshops or perhaps occasional workshops but I am unsure.

Thanks for your time and help!

Discussion

Lester Tattersall May 6, 2020:
Talleres puntuales = Workshops Lots of examples of 'talleres puntuales' online, you can see that they mean they're 'all-inclusive' - everything in one session, not a series of them.
In English we would simply call them 'workshops' - surely?- it's taken for granted that there's just one session.
To be more specific I'd say "one-session workshops" / "single session workshops".
Richela Rosales May 6, 2020:
I would say one-off or standalone, but it could also mean specific workshops.
Taña Dalglish May 6, 2020:
@ Matt I am only just coming in, but why not put in your suggestion? I just looked at: https://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=pun... and one of the choices is "one-off". My thinking is a "one-off (dedicated) workshop". Why I say dedicated is if one should feel that a distinction needs to be made for children vs. another group of participants. Hope this helps. Regards. Stay safe all!
neilmac May 5, 2020:
Occasional ... as opposed to regular is what it means. And an elegant synonym for that in English is "discrete" as I have posted in my answer. Special activities is not an appropriate translation IMHO, and even brings to mind special needs education.
Manuel Aburto May 5, 2020:
What about specific workshops?
Toni Castano May 5, 2020:
Occasional workshops That´s the meaning for me.
matt robinson May 5, 2020:
One-off workshops, for me.

special activities

Hi! I would translate this as "special activities" since it is about "talleres" for children. I think "workshops" could also work but it seems like workshops are more geared towards older students.

timely workshops

I'd say 'workshop' sounds fine. It seems to be about teacher training.

Puntual (adj)

I think 'one-off' or even 'special' workshops may also be options. The idea of of puntual is that they respond (or are responsive) to emerging needs, hence my original suggestion of 'timely.'

At least, that's my interpretation. Cheers :-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Carol Gullidge : I don’t think Timely works here :( / in what sense does it work for you?//timely has a very specific meaning. But I remain open to persuasion if you were to provide a convincing explanation!

Timely can mean 'opportune,' or 'well-timed,' which fits fine. IMO // I think it works just fine. // Your suggestion of 'temporary' does not. IMO

discrete workshops

I often translate "puntual" as "discreet" It means one-off, occasional, not regular.
For some reason, I can't post google books references here, but a quick search for "discrete workshops" throws up several example of usage in education contexts.

That's DISCRETE, not "discreet". Excuse my typo. And proz for not providing an edit button.

Example sentence:

Designing self-contained, discrete workshops brings into play most of the ideas

Such discrete workshops do not allow teachers the time to try out ideas in the classroom

Peer comment(s):

neutral Lester Tattersall : If, by "discrete workshops", you mean "Workshops on specific issues" or "themes", then maybe.
