You may have admired the yellow petals of canary creeper, the striking purple of prairie asters, and the bright orange flowers of marigolds along a roadside or in a field or garden. These are all different types of annual wildflowers—plants that complete their life cycle in a single growing season. If you are a gardener, you know to plant annuals (pansies, zinnias) every spring, but you count on perennials (daylilies, peonies) to come back year after year. In the wild, annuals typically emerge from seeds after a ***disturbance***, like winter or a dry season. They grow, flower, and die during a short window of opportunity. To emerge in such uncertain times is a risky strategy, but it has advantages. These small plants limit allocation of energy to vegetative growth, choosing instead to grow fast and invest in flowering and seed development.
