Oración: "Como yo estaba ocupado en el trabajo, y no podía ni siquiera contestar el teléfono, apenas alcancé a farfullar sorpresas y a preguntarle a María toda clase detalles sobre la muerte de Juan".
Contexto: esta oración se encuentra en una cuento que habla sobre el suicidio de una persona. En este caso el de Juan.

El autor quiere dar a entender que dijo algo de prisa y que posiblemente no significaba nada. No se debe a la exitación de la muerte de Juan sino el trabajo que lo mantiene ocupado, por lo mismo no se trata de algo que quiera indicar ese tipo de respuesta.
El lenguaje también es muy metafórico, no es una expresión gramatical común, sino algo más complejo, por lo que se debería traducir con algo que indique ese nivel de lenguaje de la misma manera: simple, pero que rompa con la cotidianeidad del idioma.
Por lo mismo creo que "babble surprises" es la mejor opción, mantiene la estructura (e incluso una de las dos palabras, aprovechando que es un cognado), el protagonista no "farfulla", sino que "balbucea", por lo que se pierde un poco esa parte más fantástica, pero sigue indicando que lo que lo hace hablar a prisa y con poca coherencia es más el trabajo que un evento que le haga perder la concentración, es todo lo contrario, por no perderla es que habla así.
