From a voltage control manual:

Once a spark occurs, spark response is a rapid quench. This means the Controller does not allow the SCR to fire for one or more full cycles, depending on the programming. Quench is then followed by a fast ramp return to the set back level which is a user-adjustable percentage of the power level at the spark or arc. (If the control is in spit spark mode, and the control detects a spit spark, the control will not go to quench, but will power down and then ramp up in 3 half cycles to the programmed set back point.)
