大陆漂移的设想早在19世纪初就出现了，最初的提出是为了解释大西洋两岸明显的对应性。直到1915年，德国气象学家阿尔弗雷德·魏格纳（Alfred Wegener）的《大陆与海洋的形成》问世，才引起地质界的震动。在这本不朽的著作中，魏格纳根据拟合大陆的外形、古气候学、古生物学、地质学、古地极迁移等大量证据，提出中生代地球表面存在一个泛大陆（Pangea），这个超极大陆后来分裂，经过二亿多年的漂移形成现在的海洋和陆地。
