Applying Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets to the Study of Ions: New Possibilities

Introduction:
Superfluid helium nanodroplets have been used extensively in our laboratory as a nearly ideal matrix in which to study a wide array of interesting neutral complexes with high resolution infrared spectroscopy. The goal of the work to be presented is to extend this capability to ions, with the current focus on sodium cations. This implications of accomplishing this are far-reaching, as the helium droplets function as a universal solvent in which any neutral molecule may be complexed with the dopant ion. This opens the door to the spectroscopy of novel ion clusters, as well as the possibility of fragmentationless mass spectrometry for applications where a single, molecular ion peak is desirable.

Methods:
The helium droplets are formed by the supersonic expansion of a high pressure of helium gas through a skimmer cone into a second chamber where sodium cations are generated via thermionic emission from a MOLECULAR SIEVE PASTE coated onto a tungsten filament. Ion optics are used to direct the cations orthogonally through the helium droplet beam path. Detection of droplets doped with cations is done with either an electron multiplier located downstream of the ion source or a quadrupole mass spectrometer arranged for the detection of externally generated ions. The pick-up of ions by the droplets and their trajectories are modeled with molecular dynamics simulations and Simion 3D.
