English term

baulking teeth

English to French Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Gear box
Appears in the following sentence:

The baulking effect is released and the sliding sleeve can be pushed into the teeth of the clutch body.

This sentence appears in a paragraph describing the synchroniser of a gear box.

The preceding sentences:

Due to this rotary synchroniser ring will be pressed against the chamfered teeth of the sliding sleeve only after the conical friction surfaces have caused the parts to be coupled to run at equal speeds.
The persistent pressure on the sliding sleeve affect the return of the synchroniser ring to its original position.

Thanks.

Discussion

Nicolas Roussel (asker) May 2, 2012:
Clarification It is "baulking effect", you're right, not teeth. "baulking" appears exactly once in a text of 98000 words. Only part needs translation, including those few sentences mentioned here.
Tony M May 2, 2012:
Clarification please! Your question headword says 'baulking teeth', but the sentence you quote actually mentions 'baulking effect' — do you in fact have the collocation 'baulking teeth' elsewhere in your text?

In passing, it is perhaps also worth noting that the EN in your source text reads decidely oddly — I suspect it may have been written by a non-native speaker, and so you should perhaps be on your guard against possible errors.

C'est effectivement une curieuse utilisation du verbe, mais si on se réfère au sens premier :

"to baulk
— vb (usually foll by at ) (foll by at )
1. to stop short, esp suddenly or unexpectedly; jib: the horse balked at the jump
2. to turn away abruptly; recoil: he balked at the idea of murder
3. ( tr ) to thwart, check, disappoint, or foil: he was balked in his plans "

Le mouvement d'embrayage est interrompu le temps que les synchromesh amènent les pièces à la même vitesse de rotation.

"If the teeth, the so-called dog teeth, make contact with the gear, but the two parts are spinning at different speeds, the teeth will fail to engage and a loud grinding sound will be heard as they clatter together. For this reason, a modern dog clutch in an automobile has a synchronizer mechanism or synchromesh, which consists of a cone clutch and blocking ring. Before the teeth can engage, the cone clutch engages first, which brings the selector and gear to the same speed using friction. Moreover, until synchronization occurs, the teeth are prevented from making contact, because further motion of the selector is prevented by a blocker (or baulk) ring. When synchronization occurs, friction on the blocker ring is relieved and it twists slightly, bringing into alignment certain grooves and notches that allow further passage of the selector which brings the teeth together. Of course, the exact design of the synchronizer varies from manufacturer to manufacturer."
