c'est toujours un peu prise de tête ces "traductions" de diplôme; mais du fait que "A-level" se passe à fin des études secondaires, entre 16 et 18 ans, il s'agit bien, d'après moi, d'une équivalence du bac; pour un employeur français, dans un CV,

Vous avez raison, je n'aurais pas du dire traduction mais explication ou même précision. En fait je préfère précision : une explication implique déjà que le diplôme a été compris, interprété, et reformulé, ce qui est une sorte de traduction.

Je crois qu’il ne faut pas traduire les diplômes ou si on le fait, ce devrait être comme Swanda l’a fait, ( avec le terme original et la traduction entre parenthèse, ou l’inverse ).
Quand le diplôme est traduit, il est presque impossible à un employeur potentiel de vérifier quoi que ce soit à son sujet; il doit le ramener à sa langue d’origine pour le faire. Processus au résultat très incertain …
En plus, cette traduction ouvre la porte à tous les abus …
Et ce n’est même pas nécessaire puisque les professionnels des ressources humaines ont accès à plein d’info sur les diplômes décernés dans la plupart des pays.

Pour Stéphanie : en effet : et je partage les avis (Tony M, entre autres) qui affirment que l'on ne peut pas considérer le bac comme équivalent aux "A-levels" - diplômes obtenus sujet par sujet : cchat en a 4, moi 3, mais je suis moins intelligent ...

Swanda's option, with all respect to her, cannot be the best option because A-levels are NOT the equivalent of Bac, except in the very broad sense of a diploma obtained at the end of high school education, and this needs to be explained to the unwary...

The same problem arises each time national diplomas or qualifications appear in source texts - apart from PhD, there are rarely any absolute equivalents in other languages/countries (see the recent questions on "Masters" for example).

I was referring to French native speakers, cchat, and you are clearly shown as "English" - but nobody suggested "sans diplôme" as a translation anyway.Whatever is wrong with retaining the UK term and adding an explanation ?!

As an Englishwoman with four A-levels, I do understand what they are. However, I agree that I was interpreting the sentence without enough context, or perhaps in the French context ;-). "sans diplôme" alone won't work, because that means no GCSEs either.

It's clear from the answers proposed by the French native speakers that they don't understand what A-levels are : all the more reason for retaining the term and adding an explanation, IMO.

Why not retain the English term and add an explanation in brackets ? That is how I always translated the qualifications (including A-levels) on my own (English) CV when changing jobs in France. It worked for me for 30 years .... :)

disagree Jennifer Levey : A-levels ne correspond pas au 'bac'. Ce sont des examens de fin d'études sécondaires 'thématiques' alors que la 'bac' est plutôt comme l'ancien 'School Certificate' (multidisciplinaire).

Merci. Aucun diplôme n'est réellement l'équivalent d'aucun autre. Le diplôme fait partie d'un système éducatif spécifique, d'où les difficultés pour traduire les diplômes.

OSSHGD

In the case of Ontario, until sometime in the 90s, you needed a high school diploma, or Grade 12, to get into college - the OSSGD or Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma. To get into university, you needed the OSSHGD or Ontario Secondary School Honours Graduation Diploma, which was the now defunct Grade 13.

Note: I add this just in case your target is Ontario.
