English term

apparently a few the worse for wear – as was his wont –

English to French Other Journalism Anecdote
J'ai compris qu'il s'agissait d'une blague un peu égrillarde, et j'ai besoin de trouver le ton qui convient... (Il s'agit d'un texte sur les paris sportifs, écrit par un australien)

"Now, there’s a story about Winston Churchill which goes something like this. Winston Churchill, apparently a few the worse for wear – as was his wont – allegedly once approached a lady and asked her if she would be prepared to sleep with him for £1million.

Maria Teresa, merci également pour ces explications.
a few the worse for wear = probably an allusion to the fact that he had been drinking? (I don't know much, sorry, but hope this points you in the right direction)
as was his wont = as was customary for him

qui apparemment avait bu quelques verres, comme à son habitude

"If something's worse for wear, it has been used for a long time and, consequently, isn't in very good condition. A person who's worse for wear is drunk or high on drugs and looking rough."

qui aurait bu quelques verres de trop, selon son habitude

Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?
Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course...
Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?
Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!
Churchill: Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.
