British commander Montgomery planned a frontal offensive closer in spirit to WWI than to Blitzkrieg. An artillery barrage would prepare the way for infantry to advance through the minefields, clearing a path along which tanks would follow. Montgomery intended it to be a "killing match" rather than a "tip-and-run" mobile warfare at which [german general] Rommel excelled.
