Japanese term
ちょうちん目
Japanese to English
Tech/Engineering
Manufacturing
漁網やスポーツネットを製造するときにできる不良のひとつ。ひし形の目の結節する部分の上に小さなわっかが残る事(糸がぎゅっと締め切れてない)
この「ちょうちん目」にあたる英語単語は存在しますか?それとも上記のように説明しないといけないでしょうか?
If directly translated, ちょうちん目 means "lantern mesh". It is a kind of defect when manufacturing nets like fishnets or sports nets. A small loop is left on a knot meaning it's not tighten completely.
Is there a term for this Japanese word? Or do I have to explain what it is?

loop defect
There are a few ways it could be said in English, but the most general term would probably be to call it a "loop defect".
If it is a loop that would straighten out and correct itself when the net is pulled tight, it would just be called a "loose knot".
If it is a loop that remains even though the knot is tight:
To describe specifically the existence of the loop, it would most-likely be referred to as a "loop defect".
More generally, the simple way to describe an error on a net would be to call it a "knot defect".
For all errors on manufactured goods, the English phrase is "manufacturing defect".
A long, but most descriptive way to say it in English would be:
"A loop caused by a manufacturing defect in the knot-tying process".
