Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): Diana Coada (X), Lara Barnett

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Cristina Crişan May 2, 2012:
The examiner in this context is the teacher and the examination happens during a regular English class. The sentences in my previous post clearly illustrate that there's nothing wrong with this usage of the verb "to examine". Plus we also have national assessment tests around here...
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
It is a valid argument and it shows current usage.

And what Lara confirmed is that ''In English an examiner would not say "i will examine" but "I will assess".
Cristina Crişan May 2, 2012:
link posted by Claudia below examine someone on something
to give someone an examination covering certain material.
I will have to examine you on this chapter myself. The teacher examined Larry on his understanding of phonetics.

What's wrong with these sentences?

@Diana "niciodata nu am auzit nici un profesor sa spuna ''today we will examine X''."
This is not a valid argument.
Claudia Coja May 2, 2012:
:) To assess - was my second suggestion. If Lara confirms it, even better;)
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
Yes, Lara! And this is not even an exam, the poster said : ''la ora de engleza'' (in English class). The teacher is addressing the class! :)
Lara Barnett May 2, 2012:
examine/assess In English an examiner would not say "i will examine". This does not work. "I will assess" is the appropriate word here.
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
Ce e gresit e ca niciodata nu am auzit nici un profesor sa spuna ''today we will examine X''. Si exemplele date de Claudia arata ca ''to examine'' se foloseste numai in contextul testelor/examenelor ''Oral assessment (i.e. oral exams) might take the form of a presentation or viva voce examination.
Cristina Crişan May 2, 2012:
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
@MCristy Da, asa e in Romania si Moldova (sau cel putin era :). Insa traducerea e in engleza si in Anglia/SUA nu se spune '' today we will examine X''.
Cristina Crişan May 2, 2012:
to examine - a asculta (oral) [şcol., univ.] http://hallo.ro/search.do?d=en&l=ro&type=both&query=asculta
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
Nu sunt de acord sa se traduca fraza originala ''Astazi il vom asculta pe elevul Vasile'' (cand profesoara se adreseaza clasei) cu ''Vasile will be examined/we will examine Vasile'' samd.
Claudia Coja May 2, 2012:
The teacher examined Larry. (active voice) Larry was examined.(passive voice)

Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
Claudia Coja May 2, 2012:
Vasile was examined:)
Diana Coada (X) May 2, 2012:
@ Claudia Aveti dreptate - in limba romana.
Lara Barnett May 1, 2012:
@ Asker Can you give more information about context and what this text is for please?

to examine (orally)

This is the idea... it's not really about "listening" or "hearing" Vasile:) It's about the oral exam(ination)...also called "viva-voce" or shortly "viva"...

That's my opinion (I used to be a teacher).

Thx:)
agree diana felton : I used to teach and examine students myself, so I agree :)

Thx:)
disagree Diana Coada (X) : Verificarea orala a cunostintelor e una. Examinarea orala=oral examination=exam. In RO se foloseste expresia si are sens, dar in EN are alt sens.

hear a child his or her lesson

in cazul asta ar fi:

Today we will hear Vasile his 'Happiness' lesson....?

Peer comment(s):

disagree Diana Coada (X) : hear=a auzi; si engleza nu e corecta.

eu stiam ca e un soi de phrasal idiom, checked with Mr. Bantas (2003 Edition); then, I guess we are both wrong :)
disagree Lara Barnett : Grammar incorrect. Not the best verb to use in this context.//You cannot say this, it would be "hear a child." "hear a child read ...."

disagree diana felton : constructie gramaticala gresita

to listen

Today we will listen to Vasile/Vasile's presentation, etc.
Peer comment(s):

Ex: ''The rest of the day we will listen to the students where they will share their work with the rest of the group.'' http://goo.gl/d4gzx
