Romanian term

...din cale afară de greu...

Romanian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature philosophical essay
"Întâi pentru că unui scriitor adevărat îi e din cale afară de greu să rupă cu tradiţia şi bineînţeles cu atât mai mult rupe cu tradiţia cu atât mai de preţ îi e opera. Toată greutatea cade deci pe valoarea intrinsecă a operei de artă."

Traducerea mea:

First, because to a true writer it is not difficult to break with tradition and of course he breaks with it all the more the more valuable the work. Therefore, all the difficulty falls on the intrinsic value of the work of art.

Am încercat s-o rezolv prin context, dar nu cunosc expresia asta "din cale afară de greu". Şi am vrut să-mi verific traducerea cu vorbitori nativi. Şi nu sunt sigură că restul traducerii e corect sau bun. Dacă mi-aţi verifica toate traducerea, aş fi foarte recunoscatoare. Vă mulţumesc!

Selected

exceedingly difficult

EXTREMELY, exceptionally, especially, tremendously, immensely, supremely, very, really, truly, most, distinctly, decidedly;

HARD, awkward, problematic, tough, demandindg, inconvenient, onerous

(The New Oxford Thesaurus of English, OUP)

Din raţiuni de context aleg difficult din seria sinonimică (greu -- greutate), deşi aş prefera hard. Trebuie ales un adjectiv căruia să-i corespundă un substantiv care să se potrivească în propoziţia care urmează. Sunt de asemenea de acord cu acel gender discrimination issue semnalat de Alex Molla.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you everyone for all your help. :) I chose "exceedingly difficult" simply because it sounded the best with the rest of the translation and was the most appropriate for the level of diction. "

extermely difficult

First, it is extremely difficult for a true writer to severe all ties with tradition and naturally, the more he distances himself from tradition, the more valuable his work is. Therefore, all the weight falls on the ....

I am not a literary translator, I was just trying to render the meaning for you. I think there is a mistake, too, it should be "şi bineînţeles cu cât mai mult rupe.."
I hope my answer is helpful.
Note from asker:
Thank you Elvira. It seems like I got the meaning of the phrase backwards! In spite of what I said in my original posting, it seems like I was trying to translate the phrase literally rather than trying to figure it out from context. I'll examine the context more closely next time.

agree Lydia Molea : very nicely put :-) btw: it's "sever" not "severe"

"unimaginably difficult"

Cred ca in acest context ar trebui sa punem ceva mai putin rece. Extremely introduce o nuanta prea oficiala, parerea mea... :) Va sugerez de asemenea sa puneti writers la plural, astfel in continuare in text se va regasi they/them nemaicreandu-se gender discrimination (he/she). De asemenea, subscriu la sugestia colegei Elvira S referitoare la "the more he distances himself from tradition, the more valuable his work is".
Note from asker:
Thanks Alex :) I agree with you about the gender issue, but this article is quite old (1926) so I should probably keep it as "he".

tough

I would suggest this translation as besides the fact that it means very/extremely difficult it also renders the sligthly metaphoric meaning of "din cale afara de..." in Romanian.
I would also add that you translated with the negative form (it is not difficult), whereas in Romanian it is the affirmative (it is difficult or tough as I suggested).
I hope this is helpful.

extremely hard

I think it's sound better "authentic writer" than " true writer"
in the context given....
