BDT, Sorry, "having".
Leonardo Lamarche Sep 28, 2010:
BDT, Como lo entiendo sin más contexto:
The basin has an area of 3,794 km2 havind an average yearly rainfall of 1096.6 mm, (could it be 3.794 km2? that is, less tha 4 km2.) extended upwards (or upstream) from the sample point.

Which river?
I may be wrong, but I have a feeling this is an extremely roundabout way of saying something that's very simple in English.
BDT (asker) Sep 28, 2010:
They are talking about the basin of a river.

thanks for the query! How you translate "captación" will depend on what it refers to -- what is being done -- could you add that detail in the Discussion comments please?

thanks for posting the additional context! I take it that "captación" refers to the water taken temporarily from the river to go through the hydroelectric turbine. I think your use of catchment would be clear here.
Note from asker:
subtended area above the catchment point?
Peer comment(s):

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : I agree with 'subtended area above the catchment point'. I found good references for each phrase in referring to basins, though none of them all together.

subtended basin area upstream from the water abstraction point

This is somewhat of a remix of what has been suggested. Also basin/drainage/catchment area, but have seen "subtended basin area" in the reference below.
Captación (e.g. for drinking water) is translated as abstraction in the Water Framework Directive; see its use in the web reference from the UK Environment Agency.
