In this context I am hesitating to translate it as the wooden kneading trough, since I´m still at the translation of the script describing St Teresa´s foundation convent of St Joseph in Avila, and this is where she is said to have slept. Wooden pallet bed?

Artesa in spanish refers to a wooden recipient used to contain liquid or semi liquid materials. Usually used to prepare paste for bread, keep water for washing or washing items. Sometimes, also to feed animals. In old times it was a typical part of the "furniture" in houses. I never heard of being used to sleep but then, I now almost nothig of Santa Teresa. If the original text points out she used it to sleep it could only be for penitence purposes.

| Here in Avila nowadays they're used still to mix up the chorizo ingredients before putting them into casings in matanza. People are aware that they were used for dough, but not much home baking going on on that scale any longer! (all this just for the record). Thanks for your help! |
