Dear Colleagues,
Yesterday my PC fainted after many weeks yielding translation like no other of my PC did, May it rest in peace.
Now I am facing the issue that my TradosStudio 2009 licence is rejected on my new computer, could you please help me solve this issuem I could not find the help on SDL help section...

Look for this issue: Return activation code to SDL.
If you return it successfully then you will be able to re-activate your licence.
Although I believe that you should have done so, before your PC breaks down.

Many thanks for your reply Maya. I did use the licence key I have been given when I first bought my licence, i.e., 3 months ago, but this time when I try to activate the same licence number, Trados interpretes that I am using it on a second computer which is not the case, as the former one is dead ;(
Do you have any other idea to solve this issue?

Studio 2009 comes with extra activations precisely for situations like yours when your pc crashes before you can return your licence.
Go to "my account" and check to see if you have an available licence.

Indeed, it seems thta I did not return my licence to SDL and to be honest I cannot remember such an instruction when I first instyalled my licence, so I resorted to the Solution Finder, they will hopefully provide me with a solution very soon as I have to deliver an urgent job !
Security is good indeed, except when it prevents legal licences owners from using them

Pierre, I guess you are asking for help on the wrong side. If you have a legal license write your issue at http://www.proz.com/forum/sdl_trados_support-65.html (the ProZ SDL support forum).

There is a much cheaper software package that Trados, it’s called NovaStore Backup!
This and many other programs offer an array of backup functions, notably disc imaging! The last time I looked it cost about 35/40 € chicken feed for what is on offer!
I have it installed it on all my PCs used for work. This software and others, can backup, copy, image, and more, I chose this one in particular because it supports tape drives, again my work PCs have Ulrtium 200/400gb tape drives, th... Sounds expensive, no! Not at all, apart from the worst case scenario of having to re buy software (very expensive), think of what is at stake here DATA, that is what is surely more important to us is it not?

and when you have a disk image and install it on a new computer, if the older applications check the NEW BIOS number, the NEW MAC address, the NEW disk ID or the NEW motherboard ID what good is a disk image for...? Imho, disk images are useful as backup, if you reinstall the same licensing schemes on the same hardware with exactly the same software or if they are not hardware dependent.

But by far the main reasons for re-installing the system using an image file is because of software, windows errors, file corruption etc. And therfore remains an extreemly valuable backup tool. Especially as the image files can be used to extract individual files.

As I said in the previous post, the software packaged referred to not only images hard drives, but also copies, backs up to tape and removable media, and syncronizes files and directories.
One of the most common failures is hard drive death! so, if for example the system is mirrored, raided, then substuting the faulty drive, and rebuilding the array would mean the machine was up and running again, without having to use the image file anyway.
And of course the problem with re-installing image files to another computer is a Windows issue, they can for the most part be sorted easily. ▲ Collapse
