Save xtml file in bilingual word format (in original Word layout)

Hi there, I'm trying to save an xtml file in bilingual Word format but when I use 'save as WFC Bilingual ..(*.doc)' I get a bilingual text in Word but all the original lay-out is gone? Is there another way to do this? Conversion software or the like. Who can help me with this one? Thx. Paul Pelsser

Did you mean txml (Wordfast Pro) format? You are talking about a Word file with formatting that has been translated in WFP, and now you need a bilingual WFC document, right?

I've never used this feature of WFP, but I would imagine that all the "ut" tags are retained once the file is converted to bilingual .doc... I have no idea how WFC subsequently handles those tags however.

What exactly do you need to accomplish with this conversion?

Hi Lori, thanks for your reply and you're right: I mean a txml file. What I want to 'accomplish' is a conversion of a txml file into a Word file in a bilingual version, i.e. if you use 'shift ctrl 8' (hdden codes) in the Word file you see per sentence the source text followed by the target text but WITH the original lay out (bold, font type etc.) If I try to to this via 'Save as - WFC bilingual ...(*.doc)' I get a bilingual version but the original layout is completely gone. I use it with TXML with source language before translation for conversion into DOC, DOCX.

In Wordfast Pro 3.2.2, there are three WFC bilingual options in the Save as type dropdown menu:



None of them will retain the original layout in a WYSIWYG fashion (bold as bold etc.). The main purpose of the File > Save as > WFC bilingual option is to let a Wordfast Classic / Trados user update their TM by way of cleaning up a bilingual file. If what you (or your client) want is a bilingual ("uncleaned") Word document with the same layout as in the original source document, you should use Wordfast Classic (or Trados Translator's Workbench) to translate it.

Neither of these gives you WYSIWYG either.

I was trying to understand what you (or your client) need(s) to do with this converted file Paul - is it just to check formatting as you go along? Do you have to send it to someone for proofreading?

What if you just "save translated file" and then merge the original source and translated file into a single two-column document so you will have the correct layout, with source and target side by side?
