It doesn't state how much money they will want to extract from you to be certified on something you already dominates enough to fully use it.

Another expense for stating in this profession..

Well, this reminds me of the whole ISO 9000 certifications... Apr 26, 2006

and no one objects there.
I do not see things that bad.
Until now I did not get such invitation, but OTOH I would consider getting such certification.

Just my 2 cents
Jerzy

If you are a technical translator, it is about value added.... Apr 27, 2006

Dear Jorge,

what follows is only my point of view. I take part in the organization of a regional section of one of the most important Italian translators' and interpreters' association. Furthermore I am a technical translator and interpreter. I work with agencies and clients worldwide and often they request a CAT tool as Trados.
Recently SDL has acquired Trados and together they represent the vast majority of the CAT tool users. I'm not here to judge the antitrust aspects of this acquisition. The new product that they have recently produced is SDL Trados 2006, which gives the opportunity to configure yr. job either with SDL or with Trados interface. I agree with their training programme and I think that this software needs and deserves a good training plan.

As this is what I miss, I tried to fill the gap by organizing in Milan a workshop about the use of both the basic and advanced functions of this software, SDL Trados 2006.

The training is complete and is composed of 2 days for the basic and 2 days for the advanced part: on the 1st day theory is taught and on the 2nd day the participants can put what they have learnt into practice by practising on a trial translation.

Should anyone be interested in this course, please, for dates and costs, refer to:
http://www.aiti-lombardia.it/eventi.html (in Italian)
because this is a very direct and practical reply to yr. doubts and questions and to many people's doubts and questions.

After the course one gets a certification about the use of this programme, which - I might think - is parallel to the one they offer.

This CAT really made my life easier and this is why I would like to use it well.

Bye from Paola

What's Trados? Apr 27, 2006

The only trouble I see with Trados is that most people who are not translators do not know what it is. Getting the training to use the software is one thing, but you would have to be reasonably certain that there was any kind of pay back on being able to display some letters or badge that most people will never have seen before.

Its effectiveness probably depends on the type of customer you have - if you are selling your services to translation agencies then it may make a great deal

Its effectiveness probably depends on the type of customer you have - if you are selling your services to translation agencies then it may make a great deal of sense, but if you simply knock out a nice line in certificates and other legally related stuff directly to people who only want translations because they have to present them in court or something, then maybe not.

Oh, if anyone wants to obtain TraWorInt certification, then I can supply you with this, and a distinguished certificate to hang on your office wall and display on your website. The cost? Well, to you a mere 200 million USD - you know it makes (non)sense.

well, who cares about them... Apr 28, 2006

Hey, I don't care if the boy scouts next door or Daughters of American Revolution out there in US of A never heard about TRADOS. I am after interested in people who know what these letters stand for. And I hope they interested in me.

Now if I get an additional stamp of approval from SDL TRADOS, I do not think, this would make me any more attractive to them or raise my market value. The best medal I can get and provide is a happy customer - the more the better (wink wink, nudge nudge *)
