Wow, I'm amazed by the results so far! (42 % of "1-3")
Hope the results change when more votes come in!

1 new client Mar 8, 2010

Plus three or four who asked for a quote (mainly through my Proz-profile) but nothing came (yet) from it. All the others are long time customers.

Sophie, do you mean you've had 20 NEW clients since the beginning of 2010? Wow!

Oh I'm sorry Mar 8, 2010

I oversaw the word new, so I spoiled the poll with my answer

Thanks for pointing it out, Andrea!

So my real correct answer is 4.

I don't know. Maybe one or three but I would need to spend several minutes checking to be sure and can't be bothered.
In fact, I don't even know how offhand how many clients I have in total, or have had since I began translating full time. I would have to spend some time looking at what passes for admin in the neilmac office to find out, but thankfully on a daily "need to know" basis... I don't!

Decline? Mar 8, 2010

1 - 3 so far. Is there a decline in the translation business?

only 1, and don't need more Mar 8, 2010

Only 1, but I'm not looking for extra customers. I already have more work than I can handle with my existing customers, so it wouldn't be a good idea to accept many new customers as I would have to turn down more work from my loyal customers then.
Having a lot of one-off customers or new customers isn't always a good thing...

It depends how you define new clients Mar 8, 2010

I normally work for agencies, and have not done any work for new agencies yet this year, although one has spent some time collecting my particulars to add me to its books.

Probably my language pairs do not come up very often among that agency's end clients.

One completely new direct client has contacted me, and I have found another.

I have collaborated with one agency and two colleagues that I had heard from before, but not recently. There were several new end clients involved. The agencies I work for regularly have sent me a mixture of jobs for new end-clients and a few I have worked for before, some many times.

Out of about 45 jobs, I am not sure how many were for new end clients. For a long time I used to send about one invoice per month to a new client (in the sense of a client not already on my list of previous clients).

But I regularly do one-off jobs or work for new end clients of the agencies I regard as my regular clients.

I voted ´Other´...

Mostly referrals Mar 8, 2010

I've had projects from a number of new clients in the first quarter of 2010, several of which appear to be long-term partnerships. Only 3 were both new and unrelated to other ventures; all were small, one-off projects.

3 new clients were word-of-mouth referrals from previous clients. The last two are technically new clients, but both contacted me directly because a project manager I'd worked with a few years ago had moved to a new company or a new sector. The influx of new clients

The influx of new clients has resulted in a significant increase in creative projects, which introduces a nice note of variety into my workflow.

None Mar 8, 2010

Last week, I had to decline three jobs (1500 to 7000 new words per job) from regular clients due to lack of time, so I'm not really looking for any new clients right now.

To me it seems that things are picking up. I have been extremely busy these past two months, especially compared to the first two months of 2009.

I've worked 4 new clients this year so far. I answered 1-3 though as one was a small job which I had forgotten about. That is unusual for me, generally I'm not on a search for new clients - but they approached me with projects exactly suited to my areas of expertise.

Last year I only had one new client - having lost some money and having had some very delayed payments, due to a couple of agenices expiring, I was very wary of taking on new clients then.

My workload has been constant all through 2009 and so far this year, I can't really say if things are picking up or slowing down.

Just one Mar 8, 2010

I also work mainly with agencies and I received an offer from a new translation company from Portugal last month. That's all the news for 2010 so far.

I haven't been "promoting" myself for a while because I'm too busy, but I think it's interesting to note that the last new clients I made have all found me in translation networks or directly through searches.

What is the reasoning behind the poll? Mar 8, 2010

I am wondering about the reasoning of the poll. What is the meaning behind the poll and what answer is "good" or "bad"?

I took the question at face value.
