Seems like they forgot to tell you about their method of payment ... Dec 22, 2012

... they might want to send you an advance via traveller's cheque. And - uuups - it will accidentally be for a much larger sum than what they owe you.
And can you please pay the balance into their bank account?

Why? Dec 22, 2012

I don't see why you consider this a scam. To mee it only looks as a potential clients asking for a rate.
There is nothing in that text implying otherwise.

Hi,

I do agree with Walter.

Just consider it as a potential client and quote for it; then see what happens next!

In addition to the reasons I mentioned in my initial post, you surely noticed that the person first asks for a rate and then sets a rate. But yeah, now that you say it, that is perfectly reasonable I guess.

The fact that the recipient of this message does not know anything about the sender is not really encouraging IMO. Usually, serious business people tell you what they do and/or who they work for - which is what leads me to mistrust the sender of this email. The question about my CV is also nonsensical as it is available via my profile. Oh yeah, and @gmail.com ... need I say more?

By all means, if you do not agree, feel free to reply to such enquiries - but I do feel that this sort of suspicious behaviour should be flagged up.

Libelling is not fair and may be illegal Dec 22, 2012

Kay,

It is up to you to reply or not to this client's proposal. What is not up to you is to libel or calumniate somebody you are not sure about.

This is a public forum, besides rules of netiquette and common sense, there are site rules you have to comply with. You are posting a private email calling its owner a scammer. This may have legal results for you and for Proz.

The least you may do to prevent that is to edit and delete the name/email address of the

I agree that the message might appear dubious, but there's no indication of an OBVIOUS scam. Everything is just our own guesses, which may or may not be true. IMO, we may discuss and analyse such emails, but not with the identity (name and email address) revealed. Just my 2 cents.

Walter, the difference between you and me is that you are accusing someone whose identity is easily verfiable. Moreover I never made any factual statements (key words I used were: "likely", "suspect", "mistrust" etc.) about the sender of the message (whose identity was not disclosed, there is more than one "Georg", I reckon).

The least you may do to edit or delete you post which contains this accusation. But I'm not really bothered if you don't, after having read Enriques post I don't think that you are an authority on this matter anyway.

I agree. Not enough to call it a scam. I might have deleted the message, but not post it publicly calling an unkonwn person a scammer.

That email address above may still be legit. I just gave you my 2 cents. You may take them or not.

Hi Kay Dec 23, 2012

and everyone else

I got the same message last week and sent a short reply, asking for contact information, etc. Needless to say, I never heard back from them...I didn´t expect any other outcome. I don´t see how this could be a scam, however, it certainly isn´t a serious business proposal either. Although I have to say, someone "offering" to pay Euro 0.12 with an IP address from Palestine (no offense), sounds too good to be true to me...

Wishing everyone a good Christ

Hi Walter,

the reason why I believe this "george" to be a scammer is because I received a similar email... even twice, once the day before yesterday (see below) and once earlier this week.

Dear Thayenge,

I would like to translate book from English to German.

The book contain 1000 pages.

If you are interested, please let me know your rate, lead
time and your CV.

Regards,
Georg

First of all, if someone has found me through my ProZ.com profile, why would he immediately ask for my CV? (And expect me to send it?)

Second, the IP address is
City Nabulus
State or Region Palestinian Territories
Country Palestinian Territories

Of course, neither the gmail address nor the location of the sender are a "guaranty" for a scam.

However, this email/these emails does/do meet quite a few scam criteria such as

1. there is absolutely no information about the sender or his enterprise,

2. there are no payment details,

and last but not least:

When I requested more information (politely explaining that I don't send my CV to someone unknown to me upon initial contact) from one of my other email addresses, there was no reply.

This might not be "alarming", however, for someone who seems to be seriously interested in my services, sufficiently to even send me two emails for one and the same job, this "silences" speaks quite loudly.

Identical mail - different name! Dec 30, 2012

Hello Kay and colleagues!

Received the identical mail with a different sender name yesterday.
My guy is called John.
He also has a gmail-address, and the mail was sent via the same surfer as the mail Kay received.
Lots going on in Nablus at the moment ...

I know you are not supposed to answer suspected scam mails. But I could not resist and asked the guy to further identify himself.
No answer. Strange ......
