I don't plan on retiring Nov 17, 2023

I don’t plan to retire and I’m well over retirement age. I started freelancing in 2006 when I retired from my in-house position. My plan is to keep on working (health permitting) as long as my clients continue to send work and I’m happy doing it…

I actually don't plan on retiring. I still have a long way to go (at least 20 years), but I think freelancing as a translator is very suitable to continue working, be it at a much slower pace, just to keep earning an extra couple of bucks.

The more important question will be if there will still be an opportunity to work as a freelance translator in 20 years. I surely won't bet my life on it that I will be able to reach the retirement age as a freelance translator.

Rewhat? Nov 17, 2023

Retiring is for people who don't like working, or who have jobs they never liked and want to stop, or who have spent their lives dealing with the stress of office politics, one-upmanship, etc.

I do not intend to retire from translation. When you notice that I don't seem to have been posting lately on Proz, you'll know they have pulled socks on to my feet (Italian saying: tirare il calzino), i.e. I've croaked.

And people who just want to do other things with their lives.

I don't plan to work much beyond 60. I may or may not keep some jobs. But I have loads of things I would rather do than work, and many of them are active, physical things that may not be possible for me once I'm older and perhaps have arthritic fingers that can no longer hold down keys or strings, or knees and hips that struggle to get up and down mountains, and brittle bones that snap when you take a tumble.

Carpe diem!

I have been entitled to my pension for eight years now! Though somewhat less according to current rules, as the pension age has been set up in Denmark.
Like others, I plan to go on as long as my clients send work, but things have been quiet this year.

Retirement + work Nov 17, 2023

I've been officially retired for... well, a while, but I keep on working. The only difference is that now I can choose the projects without having to worry about making ends meet.

I'd love my job if it were a hobby. But it's work. I don't like working. I don't like making huge amounts of money per se. I'd rather be on holiday or do things at my pace than cope with deadlines or put the alarm clock on.
Work is not for me. I find it better that others do it. I'd prefer to live a life of leisure and pleasure, but I've never found any sponsor or willing slaves to be able to afford it.

Work is not for me. I find it better that others do it. I'd prefer to live a life of leisure and pleasure, but I've never found any sponsor or willing slaves to be able to afford it.
Therefore I work. But I've always put aside because my lifelong goal has always been to stop working as early as I can. And it's already no longer bloody early. I've already failed to not start working ever, I don't want to fail twice by not stopping.
Sadly, I'll be a wreck by the time I can afford to throw the towel compared to when I started to work. I still have plenty of things to do, see, make or enjoy, which will never materialise because of work.

reducing workload gradually and stop at 70 Nov 17, 2023

I think it would be nice to make room for other things. There are lots of opportunities, even if you are 70.

I am going to be 56 tomorrow, November 18, and I would like to retire in about 10 or 12 years time from now, but at the moment I enjoy working much more than not working or sitting around the house. I would like to devote more time to reading and writing instead of going after the buck all the time, but because I enjoy my profession, looking at screens and absorbing or punching in information, I will be doing that forever...

I was due to retire at 62, now the law has changed and I have another two years to go.
I don't plan to stop working, though. I'll just carry on working for my direct clients, who I love, and I'll drop the agencies, except maybe my favourite one. I won't have to worry about finances, and there'll be a limit to what I'm allowed to earn on top of my pension, so I can pick and choose even more than now.

The question... Nov 20, 2023

"At what age would you like to retire?"

is quite different from the question "At what age do you plan to retire?"

But since you asked the former, I'll answer accordingly. ASAP. I enjoy work, but I enjoy doing other things more.

I *plan* to retire around 65 and just do the jobs I really enjoy after that to earn some extra cash for travel and fun.

I remember the 'housewives' and 'retirees', who try their hand at translation to earn a few bucks, getting a lot of stick from some of the translators on these forums, who appeared to see them no different than bottom-feeders in that they helped reduce the rates while pursuing their new-found 'hobby'.
But I suppose if you're a retired translator, you can pick and choose your translation jobs and get away with it.

I'm going to retire in about 5 minutes from now, for about 1 hour. Then I'll be back at work.
