I basically never feel such pressure.

The biggest step in recent years was starting to embrace MTPE, about 5-6 years ago, which I did very reluctantly at first. It turned out to be a crucial decision which I apparently made just in time. It's never too late to start, but back in 2021 conventional translation was still dominant, so I could gradually learn and experiment without pressure and loss of income. If you would start today, the pressure will be on immediately.

Meanwhile I've learned to master Gemini for research purposes. It's of little use for translation, imo, but it's a game-changer for research speed and understanding badly written text or text with little context. At numerous occasions AI has been making sense of things that absolutely didn't make any sense to me at first.

There seems to be a shift going on from classical neural machine translation to LLM based translation, but if you use DeepL, like I have always done, no effort is required to stay up-to-date: it's newest model is LLM-based, but specifically targeted to and trained for translation purposes. It costs me about 300 euros a year because the unlimited glossary feature is crucial, but it's worth every penny.

EDIT: talking about pennies... Apparently DeepL has changed its subscription plans and from now on the unlimited glossary feature is only available in the expensive Bussines plan for... 600 euros a year. I guess I'm lucky to have subscribed earlier... for now.

No pressure at all! When it comes to any technology, my strategy has always been to adopt the ones that interest me and skip the ones that don’t. I have been very curious about AI in general (what’s hype or not), although not so much specifically in regard to translation. I have been using Deepl Pro for a while and some Google AI Overviews have been useful, but I’m old so I’d rather get my brain working even if it takes longer…

Pressure? Mental health protection?
At this point I’m wondering if ProZ is gathering translators’ medical experience data...

I do not feel the need to learn tools that hinder my work and destroy the climate while doing so.
