I am not using Chrome and I have the same problem. Using plain Google, I just got a few true hits at the top and a bunch (actually close to 290000) of garbage thereon.
Hey, where can I get plain Google?
Louisa, Chrome is a Web browser, like Firefox, Opera, IE, only Chrome was developed by Google. (does not mean that Google search will work better).
I'd really like just a regular plain Google now and again...

You will find instructions on how to opt-out of this on the same help page.
Google also advises you to empty your cache if you experience problems like bad search results.

It took me a bit of a while to figure out how to do this. Under Tools, I went to Options, and then to Personal Stuff and to Browsing Data on that tab. You need to set Clear Data = "EVERYTHING".
Now it works!!
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR HELPING ME WITH THIS PROBLEM, BUT SPECIAL THANKS TO MATTHIAS FOR FIGURING IT OUT!!

It's great that everything seems to be working fine now for everyone. Just to reiterate: For some time now, Google not only personalizes your search when you have a Google account and when you are logged in, but potentially all searches of everyone, unless they opt out of it.
