If you do not celebrate Christmas, just share your festive music or song for the equivalent main feast.
I'm curious to see what kind of compilation we'll get here!

Mariah Carey, I put my earplugs on, no, not Apple's earpods, rather those which make you deaf to all surrounding noise.

The first was written by the saint bishop Alfonso Maria de' Liguori, here's the Neapolitan version of it (from the same author) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrFscF5_vKc
And here with the lyrics known by the most, sung by Andrea Bocelli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68mCdwb4A3k

The wonderful "Es wird scho glei dumpa" is actually a lullaby, but many people use(d) to sing it at Christmas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22S_S7ZVqEA
Then there is the "Andachtsjodler" which I discovered rather late, it's sung in the Advent period: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QFlGLAhUiQ

I grew up in the 90s in the Neapolitan area, and one of my elementary school teachers taught us this song. I still remember it by heart. Thanks for sharing

Classic carols with good tunes | Dec 18, 2024 |

-- are among my all-time favourites
My mother used to sing ´Away in a Manger´ as a lullaby for my younger siblings (and me?) all year round.
And recently I heard it sung to a haunting Scottish tune - so it is back at the top of my list again!
And We three Kings was among the first I learned at school.
My youngest sister also fell asleep to O Little Town of Bethlehem - it had to be the Forest Green tune - I´m British! However, I later came to like the St. Louis tune too.
Later I was fascinated by the haunting tune of Veni Creator Spiritus in the translation by JM Neale:

I still love it.
Three Kings from Persian lands Afar is difficult to sing, but beautiful - my school choir sang it every year at the end-of-term carol service. https://www.lieder.net/lieder/get_text.html?TextId=73882
My current favourite is It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, but for me, it has to be sung to Arthur Sullivan´s Noel - sorry Americans! - even though it is an American carol. The beautiful melody and the words, so eternally appropriate to our times, really go to my heart!

´Oh, hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing!´

Secular songs are not among my favourites: they tend to be too sentimental. I cannot abide Jingle Bells and slushy versions of White Christmas, and I really hate the Danish version of Rudolph!!
I´ll happily go on a wordless ´Sleigh Ride´ any time the radio plays it.

I think "Last Christmas" by Wham is the most hated piece - or could it be beaten?
