No. His advice is not to have any kids yourself. Perhaps you'd like to have a go at writing an alternative verse?
Children of our parents | Dec 14, 2023 |
A quote by Heraclitus comes to mind: "We should not speak and act as children of our parents.” οὐ δεῖ [ὡς] παῖδας τοκεώνων [ποιεῖν καὶ λέγειν]

We're all different. I love/loved my parents, despite frequent clashes in my teens. I don't blame my failings or my life's problems on them. So I'll take sunny Adrian Mitchell over sourpuss Larkin any day. (You should read the Larkin above first for the full effect.) This be the worse They tuck you up, your Mum and Dad. They read you Peter Rabbit, too. They give you all the treats they had And add some extra, just for you. They were tucked up when they were small, (Pink perfume, blue tobacco-smoke), By those whose kiss healed any fall, Whose laughter doubled any joke. Man hands on happiness to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. So love your parents all you can And have some cheerful kids yourself. I did, thanks. I also like this rejoinder to Larkin from Judith Rich Harris, quoted in the page to which I linked above. How sharper than a serpent's tooth To hear your child make such a fuss. It isn't fair — it's not the truth — He's fucked up, yes, but not by us. Regards, Dan

I could touch on all the bases other people have already covered: my parents, who provided the stable family substrate on which all the rest was constructed; some excellent teachers, who opened my eyes to new ways of experiencing and doing; fellow students at university, where I arrived thinking myself a brilliant student, only to discover that I was in fact below average; my grandmother and her social circle, who taught me that most of what I thought was new, was not. But just to be different, I'll pick on the Monty Python team, who in that show and its precursors (I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again, At Last The 1948 Show) largely formed my sense of humour during the 1960s. Without the ability to laugh at even the most grotesque misfortunes, I don't think I'd have made it this far.

Not according to Alice Miller (whose book I mentioned). They may think they are on the child's side and "doing thie best for them", but this may be obstructing and frustrating the child, who may have other plans. There was a generation that understood this and wrote songs with lyrics like She goes down the stairs to the kitchen Clutching her handkerchief Quietly turning the back door key Stepping outside, she is free She, ... (we gave her most of our lives) Is leaving (sacrificed most of our lives) Home (we gave her everything money could buy) She's leaving home, after living alone, for so many years
