I see this phrase a lot and it puzzles me. For example: "detalles novedosos de la gesta contemporánea más importante de la historia dominicana". Also "Cada 2 de abril recuerda su gesta contemporánea".

contemporary happening; contemporary event
The first response is probably fine. But, as was explained, "gesta" is defined as "hecho memorable" . Comment: "In my current text there's no implication of the event being outstanding so this translation works perfectly.

heroic deeds or exploits of the present day
From latin gesta, cf. eg. 'Gesta Danorum', the heroic history of the Danes, or Fr. Chansons de geste, songs of heroic deeds, and the (less well known?) Sp. Cantar de gesta.
So the whole phrase might run, eg: "new details about the most important present-day exploits in Dominican history..."

contemporary exploits
In the beginning the tribal gods would be the theme of a hymn of praise or thanksgiving; and since the heroic ancestors of the chieftains were thought to be the sons of gods, it was easy to pass from god to man and contemporary exploits in some famous raid were not forgotten.
