Tamil term

Pottakennar

Tamil to English Art/Literary Tourism & Travel Term related to an abandoned agricultural field
Hello everyone! I have found this term in a short story. It is the name of a well, but it's not capitalized, which leads me to believe this word could have a larger meaning. Te full sentence is this:

She took him to a large, abandoned well -the pottakennar.

I am not sure if this is Tamil or another dialect. The author is from South India. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me with the possible meaning of this word, or at least show me a reference that can point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Well without any perapet-wall

Pottakenaru is well used mostly for agricultural purposes, without any protection wall or parapet wall.
As in Mr.Mohammed Fahim quoted poem, for villagers, it is a suicidal point.
In some areas, it is called "Mottakinnar".

agricultural well on an arid land

It has been written as பொட்டக்கிணறு. It's a deviation from பொட்டல் கிணறு. Here, பொட்டல் meaning arid land.
