German to English: Der Kobold--The Goblin General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Translation - English “The Goblin”
By Wilhelm Busch
There was a kind of little dwelling
(The second floor contained the belly),
There was a dwelling with a problem:
It was haunted by a goblin.
He ran, the wild and naughty feller
Between the attic and the cellar;
He crashed about and caused a riot
Until the landlord, with disquiet
And, fearing more from day to day,
Burned down the house and moved away.
He builds himself another place,
And thinks he’ll have a quiet space,
Except, it turns out he thinks wrong:
The goblin ups and comes along,
And now cavorts from floor to floor,
And makes more mischief than before.
“Hah,” says the man, “Who are you, Elf?”
The goblin laughs, “I am your Self!”
