Source text - English A critical realism can additionally grasp the fragmentary aspect of this relation, and also qualify the moral realism associated here with the epistemological concept. The further attribution of this realism as a constructive-critical one attributes due credit to the facilitating powers of humans. I will hence describe these relations here with the term constructive-critical realism (CCR) and try to apply the concept on the issue of sustainability.
This version of realism emphasizes the constructive-critical role of the subject, which mirrors two essential capacities of the human mind, the abilities to believe and to doubt. CCR is originally an epistemology that orientates its form at the respective research field. It is nevertheless open for an ethical or theological interpretation of the matter described. Epistemologically, CCR agrees with a critical view of the subject’s role in the natural sciences; here, the subject’s influence on research needs to be eliminated as much as possible, even if this is never totally the case. A realism best expresses the experience of discovery and persistence of reality that scientists have. In cultural sciences and humanities, the contribution of the subject, however, is crucial to the research field, which approximates a constructivism. CCR therefore is a form of realism that allows for some constructivism, especially regarding cultural research objects.
The combination of the two attributes has an additional evaluating meaning and hence hints at the relation of research and ethics; in scientific research processes, cultural construction involving ethical decisions takes place, and therefore no attempt to know is innocent. When we have to admit that the knower is part of the process of knowledge, his or her values do matter in research.
In theological interpretation of this setting, we are on the one hand responsible stewards of the creation and have to be careful regarding our actions. We do not own the Earth. On the other hand, we are maybe more than just stewards. All “beings of the universe” (Francis 2014) that are created in God’s image , are in some sense co-creative. One can even speak of humans as “created co-creators”.
Translation - French Un réalisme critique peut en outre appréhender l’aspect tronqué de cette relation et également caractériser le réalisme moral associé ici au concept épistémologique. La considération ultérieure de ce réalisme en tant que critique constructif lui donne la juste valeur de facilitateur des pouvoirs des humains. Je décrirai donc ici ces relations sous le terme de réalisme critique constructif (RCC) en essayant d’appliquer ce concept à la question de la durabilité.
Cette version du réalisme met l’accent sur le rôle critique constructif du sujet, qui reflète deux facultés essentielles de l’esprit humain, la capacité de croire et de douter. Le RCC est à l’origine une épistémologie qui oriente sa forme vers le domaine de recherche respectif. Elle est néanmoins ouverte à une interprétation éthique ou théologique du sujet décrit. Sur le plan épistémologique, le RCC est en accord avec une vision critique du rôle du sujet dans les sciences naturelles ; ici, l’influence du sujet sur la recherche doit être éliminée autant que possible, même si ce n’est jamais totalement le cas. Le réalisme exprime le mieux l’expérience de la découverte et de la persistance de la réalité que vivent les scientifiques. En sciences humaines et culturelles, la contribution du sujet est en revanche cruciale pour le champ de recherche, ce qui se s’apparente à une forme de constructivisme. Le RCC est donc une forme de réalisme qui permet un certain constructivisme, notamment en ce qui concerne les objets de recherche culturels.
L’association des deux attributs a une signification évaluative complémentaire et fait donc allusion à la relation entre recherche et éthique ; dans le processus de recherche scientifique, se déroule une construction culturelle impliquant des décisions éthiques, et par conséquent aucune tentative de découverte n’est anodine. Lorsqu’il s’agit d’admettre que celui ou celle qui a la connaissance est partie intégrante du processus du savoir, ses valeurs personnelles ont leur poids dans sa recherche.
Dans l’interprétation théologique de cette configuration, nous sommes d’une part les gardiens responsables de la création et devons faire attention à nos actions. La Terre ne nous appartient pas. D’autre part, nous sommes peut-être plus que de simples intendants. Tous les « êtres de l’univers » ([Pape] François 2014), créés à l’image de Dieu , sont en quelque sorte co-créateurs. On peut même parler des humains en tant que « co-créateurs créés ».
